December 1928. ____ Halvor was known initially as Halvor Engebretson, but he changed his last name to Moen when he came to America. He reportedly took his name from a cousin, Tallof Moen. Tallof had received money from Halvor and gone to America sometime later. Some of Halvor's living grandchildren remembered seeing feed sack with the name "H. Engebretson" painted on them to identify them from others. Exactly when the name change occured or its origin is not known, but it apparently was changed close to the time Halvor came to America. Halvor's cousin, Tallof Moen, owned a lumberyard, first in Elizabeth and later in Rothsay which was known as the Moen Lumber Company. Tallof Moen and his wife are buried in Our Savior's Cemetery, Rothsay. Irene Moen Ronningen. ----- Halvor and Dina lived in a dugout in the hills south of their eventual building site on the east side of Moen Lake. Moen lake is located about five miles east of Rothsay. The farm was to become known as Ingvald Moen's farm. Signs of the dugout were still visible in the 1980's. Halvor and Dina later built a large house, barn, granary, garage and a smoke house. Only the granary is still standing. The site was in a beautiful setting with many oak trees and the lake nearby. The Oscar-Trondhjem boundary line is close to the north side of Halvor's building site. Halvor and Dina raised small grains, potatotes, corn and always had a few cows, chickens and horses. The pasture for his cattle was the hills south of the buildings. They had to pace a cow bell on one of the animals so they could find them again. The nearby lake supplied water for the animals, but Halvor eventually dug a well close to the barn and used a large gasoline engine to pump water. They used a horse and buggy to travel to South Immanual Church, about five miles away and where Dina was one of the first Ladies Aid members. Halvor was remembered as a tall, skinny man while Dina was described as short and "stubby". His grandchildren remembered him walking around the farm repairing fences and coming home with bloody hands. He was remembered as kind and gentle. Fergus Falls Weekley, November 22,1928 Halvor E.
