John E. Moen, One of the Countys First Settlers, Dies, in the town of Oscar

John Engebretson Moen, one of the first settlers of Otter Tail County died in the town of Oscar Tuesday night from complications incident to old age. Mr. Moen was 80 years old and took a homestead in Oscar in 1866.

One of his daughters is Mrs. Charles Grouwes of Elizabeth and one is Mrs. Ole Hovland of Oscar. Fergus Falls Daily Journal, December 16, 1920, page 4.

John Engrebretson Moen
John Engrebretson Moen was the son of Engebret Moen and Kari Johnsdatter. His brothers and sister were Erick Moen, Halvor Moen and Guri Moen, who were twins, Engebret Moen, and Levor Moen. John was first married to Margit Tollefson, a relation to the Helgesons and Rians of Rothsay. She is buried at Hedemarken Cemetery. John & Margit homesteaded the Moen farm, now owned by Arnie & Kay Moen.
Jon Engebretsen Huseplass, age 25, and Margit Tollefsdtr, age 24, and Tollef Gundbjrnson, age 50, left Fla on May 3, 1867 from Drammen on the ship Flora arriving in Quebec on June 11, 1867.

1867 emigration:
John Ingebr. Kolsrudeie born 24 December 1841
and wife Margit Tollefsd born 3 January 1843.
They emigrated at the same time as Erik Ingebrethsen Kolsrudmoen. Edna Rude first indicated 1866 later corrected it to 1867. Note that the obituary lists 1866 as emigration year.

On another page of the emigration list from the minister at Flaa, Hallingdal also for the same year is a Tollef Gunbjrnsen Ovieng born 10/10/1810. There is no description such as "farmer," widower or any such thing and no wife listed. Could this be Margit and Christi Tollefsd (Mrs. Rier) Helgeson's father? This information was from Edna Rude, Gary, MN from the microfilms at the Vesterheim Genealogical Center at Madison Wisconsin and sent to Robert Helgeson, Fergus Falls, MN. MGM.

William Grunewald of Oscar, has recently purchased 40 acres of land adjoining his own farm from J. E. Moen, we did not learn the consideration. Nov 13, 1909. Rothsay Paper.
