OLE OLSEN GRONSETH
Ole Olsen Gronseth was born at Garden Gren in Sigdal the 19th of March, 1846. His parents were Ole Tollefsen Gronseth and Berit Kittilsd Gronseth. He was baptized by Pastor Jens Stub in the Holman Church and he was confirmed by the same pastor in the same church in 1860. When he was one year old his parents moved to Gronseth pa Grenskogen. This is where he grew up. His teacher was Kittil H. Dahl. Then in 1869 he accompanied his parents to America. They planned to go to Rochester, MN. And then they spent the first summer in Olmstead county, MN. Then they moved to Dodge county. They were there until 1872 and during this period of time he did farmwork in Olmstead and Dodge counties, Minnesota. The wages were very small. In the spring of 1872, together with his parents, brother Tollef, and sister Else, and Paul & Hakon & Knut Skyliholt and Kittil E. Ingeboe were with. They drove oxen and they had cows along so it took them a long time before they got to Wilkin county. They did discover that there was some free land left. Three miles south of Rothsay in the eastern part of Wilkin county. They all took homestead there of 80 acres. And here there was all new settlers and there was no new work to get and they had no money. Ole went north aways and he got work at the NP Railroad. His brother Tollef had to stay home and put up hay for the cattle and horses. The closest town was Elizabeth and that was 12 miles away. No railroad was closer than Breckenridge. For many years this was their only marketplace. They had to haul their wheat 20-30 miles. For many years now they could market their grain in Rothsay and that was only 4 or 5 miles. In these 42 years that he has been here in Wilkin county he has been farming and he is unmarried. Sigdalslaget 1914.
