Samson STRONG was born on JAN 6 1816 in Willink, Erie Co., NY. He died on MAR 18 1863 in Camp Pollack, Scott Co., IA. He was a freewill Baptist and a farmer in Tama County. In 1855 the family,
with seven children, moved west in a covered wagon, with the opening of western lands. Land could be bought for about 22 cents to $1.25 an acre. Seeing the fertile prairie of Iowa, they stopped just north of Montour. They first built a log cabin and in 1857 finished a house built of limestone cut from a nearby quarry. The home, one of the oldest pioneer homes in Iowa, still stands, though in disrepair, and is a favorite subject for artists and photographers. In 1862 the governors of Iowa and Minnesota asked for volunteers to help fight the Sioux Indians. The Indians were attacking the forts and settlers in these states after the US Cavalry had left to fight in the Civil War. Samson, at age 46, enlisted on Oct. 27, 1862, in Company "F", Sixth Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Cavalry and was mustered into service Nov. 7, 1862. He was sent to Camp Hendershott near Davenport. He passed away on March 18, 1863 in Camp Pollock, Scott Co., IA from pneumonia, during a severe and prolonged snow storm. His body was brought home in an army wagon at which time his family learned of his death. His widow received $8 a month and $2 a month for each of her 4 dependent children. He kept a Civil War diary and copies are available.

according to letter to editor of Toledo Chronicle, june 18, 1986, from Marlene Langbehn : Samson and his wife Frances "Fanny" Keller Strong and seven children came out by covered wagon from Union County, OH, near West Mansfield. They came about 1855 and settled in southern Tama County. They were accompanied by Fanny's sister Shady Keller and her husband James B. Smith who settled in nearby Marshall County. Little is known about the Smith family at this time except that they had seven daughters named Rachel J., Mary F., Barbara, Sarah L., Susan E., Ruth O., and Ella, and married into such names as Hixon, Narbor, Blair, Inman, Cronk, Kelley, and Clifford.
