The John Potochney Family of Centralia, Pa.

 

John Potochney

Son of John and Mary (Byzdill) Potochney

Born: 10 February 1876 in Vojtocz, Hungary (now Vojtovce, Slovakia)

Married: Mary Imbro on 6 February, 1897 in Freeland, Pa.

Died: 26 July 1914 in Centralia, Pa.

According to the 1910 US Census, John emigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Slovakia) in in 1895 and was naturalized several years later. Originally settling in Freeland Pa, he and his family eventually located to Centralia, Pa. where John worked as a coal miner.  John and Mary were married in the Greek Catholic Mother Church in Freeland, Pa. one year after Mary immigrated to the United States.  It is unknown whether they knew each other in Hungary, however this is very possible since Mary was born in Kurima, a town barely 10 miles northwest of Vojtocz.   Of the Greek Catholic religion, John was one of the members of a committee that was formed on August 15, 1911 for the purpose of building a Greek Catholic Church in Centralia - now called St. Mary's Church. He and Mary, who was of the Roman Catholic religion, had 11 children - 8 who survived childhood are pictured below.  John died after sustaining a broken neck from falling off of his porch while sleeping at his home on Railroad St.
