Papa Gerbil felt a twinge of guilt for stealing the cow. Yet, there was a common saying in that day: "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk free?" Papa Gerbil said to himself, "I'll just try this cow for a while before I buy her. That way I'll know if she is a good creature and if she produces good milk." Of course, the rightful owner was never consulted and hence theft was committed - all for free milk and the warmth of an animal. Papa Gerbil and the stolen cow lived together and raised the two gerbils for several years. In truth, the two gerbils became quite wild. It seems that Papa Gerbil had given in on one point of moral conduct and therefore gave in on others. The two gerbils were even forced to call the stolen cow "Mama Cow", which seemed to confuse their wild minds even more. Papa Gerbil's neighbors were quite distressed about the entire situation. They knew the cow was stolen because Papa Gerbil did not have the golden ring of ownership. However, the neighbors did not know who rightfully owned the cow so there was little they could do. Moreover, it is a difficult thing to point out someone's wrong when the common response of the day was: "Mind your own business!" The rightful owner had not forgotten about his cow. He searched far and wide to find her, but couldn't. One day, he went to the Judge and explained the situation. After a thorough description had been given him and documents of ownership were shown, the Judge sent messengers to find the cow. On that very day, the cow was found. Papa Gerbil was quite surprised to be taken to the court for judgment. He whined and complained that he couldn't find the owner and the cow had gone willingly. Yet, justice must always win out in the end. The gerbil was made to pay a steep price for the stolen milk and cow, he was sent to prison for theft, and his little gerbils went to live with Mama Gerbil. The moral of the story? The Gerbil and the Stolen Cow
Once upon a time there was a Mama Gerbil and a Papa Gerbil who had two baby gerbils. Everything seemed fine in the Gerbil household. However, it is hard to raise baby gerbils and provide for them Mama Gerbil and Papa Gerbil began to argue and soon decided they should go their separate ways. Papa Gerbil went to the Judge and was given the care of the two baby gerbils. Mama Gerbil was so upset, she moved far, far away.
Pretty soon, Papa Gerbil realized it was even harder to raise two baby gerbils on his own, but he was too prideful to ask Mama Gerbil to come help him. He decided he would have to do his best until he could find help.
One day, he was taking a solitary walk when he spotted a cow. The cow was quite fair to look at. He thought to himself, "Now there is an animal that can help me raise my baby gerbils." The cow was soon persuaded to go with Papa Gerbil to his home. You see, cows by nature are dumb animals. She had been in the pasture only a short while, but thought it had been years. She had even forgotten that her rightful owner would soon come to get her.
Papa Gerbil felt a twinge of guilt for stealing the cow. Yet, there was a common saying in that day: "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk free?"
Papa Gerbil said to himself, "I'll just try this cow for a while before I buy her. That way I'll know if she is a good creature and if she produces good milk."
