 Thin-barked
young trees such as maple, ash, linden, crabapple, and honey-locust may sometimes be
damaged by rapidy changing temperatures. This problem occurs when the sun's rays warm the
trunk during a winter day, and the temperature drops abruptly when the sun sets. To reduce
the chance of bark injury, trees should be wrapped using a specially designed waterproof
tree wrap (found at most garden centers and nurseries). Start by wrapping at ground level,
overlapping halfway on each turn to produce a shingle effect that will shed water. Wrap up
to the first major branch and secure that wrap with a plastic expandable tape. Tree wrap
should remain on the tree from November through April throughout the 4-5 year
establishment period. The diagram below illustrates a recommended method of tree wrapping. |
