��� The area over the roots should be mulched to help conserve moisture, reduce grass and weed competition, prevent surface crusting, prevent cold and freeze damage, maintain a more uniform soil temperature, and eliminate the potential damage caused to the tree trunk from moving or trimming equipment. Mulch materials include wood chips, ground bark, expanded shale, or compost. Apply a 3-4 inch layer of mulch in a 3 foot diameter around the tree. Grass clippings and some leaf litter should not be used because they compress and mat together, restricting water and oxygen movement.
