Samuel Kight was born about 1784 in Pitt County, North Carolina, the son of Samuel and Rachel Kight. Samuel married Permelia Stafford (born 1790), daughter of William Stafford and Sarah Collins, about 1805 in Pitt County. During the War of 1812 Samuel served in the 3rd Company under Captain Reading Shipp, detached from the Pitt Regiment (the 2nd) under Lt. Colonel Simon Bruton.
Shortly before 1820, Samuel and Permelia moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia, where they remained until after the 1827 Land Lottery, when Samuel won lots in Lee and Troup Counties. By 1830 Samuel Kight was living in Heard County, Georgia, where he died sometime before 1840. Samuel's widow Permelia remained in Heard County, where she died in 1865, and was buried in the Kight section of the cemetery at Salem United Methodist Church. See Permelia Stafford Kight's tombstone.
