THIRD GENERATION

Littleton Williamson (1794-1880) and Mary Kight (1818-1882)

Littleton Williamson was born in Hancock County, Georgia on July 11, 1794, the son of Revolutionary War veteran Zachariah Williamson and his wife. About 1806 the family moved to the section of newly-created Baldwin County that would become Putnam County, and while there Littleton enlisted at nearby Fort Hawkins for a 3-month tour of duty as a private in Captain West Whitaker's Comany of detached Georgia militia under Major John H. Broadnax. At the time of his service, which lasted from February 3 to April 3, 1815, his physical description was later recalled to be 5 foot, 8-10 inches tall, dark hair, fair complexion, and grey eyes. See Littleton's War of 1812 military service record, and see Littleton's 1873 survivor's pension application and Mary's 1880 widow's pension application.

After his military service, Littleton took up his own residence on a portion of his father's land along Indian Creek in Putnam County. Shortly before his father's death in 1826, Littleton and Zachariah moved to Bibb County, where in 1827 Littleton won a land lot in 3rd District of the newly-formed Coweta County on Georgia's western frontier. Littleton moved there with his elderly mother by 1830, when his land became part of Heard County, where he would spend the rest of his life. In February of 1832, the 38-year-old Littleton married Mary Kight, the 14-year-old daughter of his neighbors Samuel Kight and Permelia Stafford. Littleton and Mary ultimately raised 10 children on their farm. Littleton Williamson died of dropsy on May 5, 1880, and his wife Mary died on June 30, 1882. Both are buried in Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church in Heard County. See photographs of original headstones of Littleton and Mary.
