James J. Lipham was born on March 9, 1825 in Putnam County, Georgia, the first son of John A. Lipham and Sarah _____. James grew up in Troup County, where his father died in 1840, leaving his widowed mother to remarry John's older brother Daniel in 1841. Soon thereafter, on February 3, 1843, James J. Lipham married Elizabeth J. Walston, probably the daughter of neighbors John Walston and Sarah Wilson. Elizabeth bore three daughters, the last two of them twins, before her death around 1846. James remarried on September 7, 1848 to Elizabeth Heard, with whom he had several more children before his own death on March 5, 1858. James is buried at Eden Primitive Baptist Church in Bowdon, Georgia; his first wife Elizabeth Walston's grave has not been located.
