THIRD GENERATION

James Davis (1795-1875) and Anne Fletcher (1810-?)

James Davis was born in 1795 in North Carolina, the son of Lewis Davis. James moved with his father to Ware County, and on July 18, 1820 in neighboring Telfair County, James married Elizabeth Peterson (1796-?), with whom he had six children. By 1850, however, James and Elizabeth had separated, and James was living in the household of Anne Fletcher with her eight children born between 1831 and 1849, apparently by James Davis. The 1860 census of Coffee County shows James Davis and Anne still together (she used the surname Smith that year) with their children, and by 1870 they had all adopted the Davis surname, which all the children later used. James died in Coffee County in 1875.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: As is the case with the vast majority of the family bio pages on this site, some of the information and details regarding this family are derived from the voluminous research of my uncle Daniel Worth, now available online at my father Gene Worth's web site Worth and Solomon Genealogy. My aunt Iva Yeager also shared her own related research with me more than two decades ago, which first sparked my interest in genealogy. In addition, the broad genealogical outlines of many of these families were presented years ago by Huxford in his multi-volume set "The Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia."
