Benjamin Futral (1776-1869) and Nancy Smith (1790-1872)
Benjamin Futral was born in 1776 in Northampton County, North Carolina, apparently the son of Etheldred and Polly Futral. Benjamin grew up in North Carolina during the American Revolution (in which his father fought in the Georgia Continental Line), and moved with his father to Johnston Co., NC in 1800. By 1809, Benjamin Futral had moved to Greene County, Georgia, where he later married Nancy Smith (born 1790), daughter of neighbors Richard and Patience Smith, on October 17, 1811. Benjamin served two terms as Second Lieutenant in the 162nd Militia District of Greene Co. between 1819 and 1822, but in 1823 he sold his land to brother-in-law James Smith and moved to the newly-formed Henry County along Georgia's western frontier.
Benjamin and Nancy Futral ultimately had 14 children, raising their family on their farm in the 2nd District of Henry (after 1851 Spalding) County. Benjamin Futral died there on January 29, 1869, and his wife Nancy in 1872. Both are buried in a family plot in Spalding County. See photographs of Benjamin's and Nancy's headstones.
