Ref: 1860 Census, Barton County MO., 1900 Census, Crawford Co. KS.
Thomas missing in 1900 census, wife Mary shows married and head of
household.
[259]
1880 census shows Thomas and his family living in Barton County, Lamar
Township.
It finally dawned on me that Thomas was living next door to him and his
family.
[260]
If we look at Dan's children, Thomas's brother we can track Thomas and
his brother
down. Dan had one son born in Missouri, Lamar no doubt, 1776. The same
year
Thomas had a son in 1776 in Lamar, Missouri as well; that was my
grandfather
Charles Michael Gallagher.
[261]
Dan's next to the youngest child was born in Ireland in 1766. So now we
know
for certain that our Gallagher line did not arrive in this country betwen
1766
and 1776. This narrows down a whole lot of research and time.
[262]
I was going along with what my father told me; they came to America
because of the
famine. This is not true, the famine started in the 1840's through 1850
something.
The Irish were pouring into America then and were called Death ships and
Coffin Ships
because so many died enroute from hunger and disease; disease caused from
the
lack of nourishment and lowerd antibodies.
[263]
From what I'm told, these passengers were expected to bring their own
food along and many
didn't have enough to make the trip; which probably took about 2 weeks
back then.
[264]
So now we're trying to locate a book I was told about with the ship's
passenger lists,
called "Irish to America". We need the volume that covers 1766-1776.
When we find
that book with these two families we will have found our ancestors. Then
we will see where
that will lead us next.
