As with many other outdoor pursuits in British Columbia, the fishing is considered to be second to none, be it salt-water or fresh water variety. The opportunity for the fisherman to test his skill abounds throughout the province, be they fishing for salmon, halibut, trout or steelhead.
There are few greater thrills than hooking in to a feisty, bright Pacific Salmon. British Columbia boasts all five species of Pacific Salmon, with the mighty Chinook and the lightning quick Coho the favorites with the sports anglers. Recently, the fly-fishing fraternity has embraced salt water fishing for salmon in many areas along the BC coast. And although BC attracts salmon fishers from all over the globe, you can still count on discovering that very special little kelp bed with a shimmering patch of feed - darting this way and that - where your trophy salmon searches for breakfast. Constantly changing ocean and weather patterns affect returns each year, so be sure to check the latest Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations in the area you plan to fish.
Campbell River has been regarded for years as being the Salmon Fishing Capital of the World (although Port Alberni is bound to contest that) and it is true that here is where you are likely to chatch the "big one". For purists, there is the added thrill of becoming a member of the Tyee Club, where strict regulations prohibit the use of engines (you must row) and light tackle is used to fish the famous Tyee Pool.
Virtually the entire coast provides good chances to catch salmon, halibut or ground fish. Fishing lodges are numerous, from budget minded seaside motels with available rental and charter fishing boats, to the deluxe fly-in remote coastal lodges. The Hakai Pass, Queen Charlotte Islands, and northern waters near Kitimat and Prince Rupert boast excellent salt-water fishing opportunities.
All regions boast thousands of lakes and rivers with magnificent fishing opportunities for the freshwater angler. From fighting steelhead to kokanee salmon, to Dolly Varden in the coastal rivers and streams, angling has never been better. Best known, perhaps are the famous Kamloops trout, or the world's largest breed of rainbow trout found only in Kootenay Lake - the Gerrard.
