The traditional forge is fired with coal, charcoal, coke, or even wood. There are other, modern forges that use propane, natural gas, or one of a few other flammable gases/liquids. I may eventually build a propane forge, but for now I'm sticking with coal forges.

If you are interested in a gas forge, there are websites with information on how to construct one. One is Ron Reil's website. There are also factory built forges (both gas and coal) available from a few suppliers. One supplier is Centaur Forge.

Whichever forge you decide is right for you, make sure you have plenty of ventilation available. Operate it outside or under a carport. If you decide to set it up inside, make the area as fireproof as possible and be certain you won't have a problem with oxygen depletion or a buildup of toxic fumes.
