Michel was born 22 Oct, 1814 in New Orleans and christened at St. Louis Cathedral on 24 Oct, 1815. He married Antoinette Duvernay on 19 Mar, 1835 in New Orleans. Antoinette was born to Antoine Duvernay and Margarita Eufrosine Buquois on 29 Jul, 1815 and christened in St. Louis Cathedral on 13 Mar, 1816. Antoinette died before 1877, however, the place of her death is unknown. Antoinette was still living at the time the 1850 Federal Census was taken. She is listed a 35 years old at the time. Michel is listed as age 36, and his occupation is listed as Comptroller of Jefferson City, Jefferson Parish, LA. The original "Jefferson City" lies in a wedge formed (approximately) by Tulane University to the west, Airline Hwy. to the north, Jackson Ave. to the east, and St. Charles Ave. to the south. Audubon Park may have also been a part of this city. Michel married his second wife, Elisabeth Sanchez on 19 May, 1880, so Antoinette must have died before this time. Michel and Antoinette had 8 children together. According to family lore, Michel was an accountant while living in the city of New Orleans. Antoinette knew the midwife who delivered babies in Ascension Parish, and so she traveled from New Orleans to Ascension Parish to deliver her babies. That would have been quite a trip for a pregnant woman in those days! Their children were:
- Laurent Amedee Morin, born 10 Aug, 1837 in Ascension Parish and christened 28 Aug, 1837 in Ascension Parish. He married Marie Egiree Duvernay at St. Joseph Church, Livingston Parish, LA. Laurent died on 25 April, 1897 at the age of 27 years. He is buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Livingston Parish, LA.
- Marie Clara Morin, born 20 Nov, 1838 and christened on 10 Mar, 1839 in Ascension Parish. She married Adam Laiche on 29 Apr, 1867 at St. Theresa Church in Gonzales, Ascension Parish.
- Marguerite Dorlisca Morin, born 11 May, 1840 and christened on 13 Sep, 1840 in Ascension Parish. Marguerite may have married a man by the last name of Brignac. There is a Marguerite Brignac, (widow Morin) shown on the 1882 St. Joseph Church census. She is shown as 43 years old, which would make her birth year in about 1839.
- Joseph Edouard Morin, born 2 Sep, 1841 and christened on 13 Dec, 1841 at St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans. He married Marie Eugenie Villeneuve before 1870. Joseph Edouard and his wife, Marie Eugnie are shown on the 1882 St. Joseph Church census as living in Couteau Brown, Livingston Parish, LA. He is also listed on the 1890 Federal Census as living in Ascension Parish, LA with his wife and 7 children. Edouard died on 29 Jan, 1921 and is buried in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in St. Amant, Ascension Parish, LA.
- Mathieu Morin, born 20 Feb, 1843 and christened 6 May, 1844 in Ascension Parish. He married Mary Camille Louveau in 1867. Mathieu and Metilda Camille are listed on the 1882 St. Joseph Church census and are shown as living in Coteau Brown. He died on 22 Nov, 1916 and is buried in Holy Rosary Cemetery in St. Amant, Ascension Parish, LA. (On his headstone, the surname is spelled Maurin.) Metilda Camille died in 1901 and is buried in the French Settlement Community Cemetery in Livington Parish, LA.
- Louise Malvina Morin, born 10 Oct, 1844 and christened 13 Oct, 1844 in Ascension Parish. She married John Henry Spalding on 27 Dec, 1870 at St. Theresa Church in Gonzales, Ascension Parish, LA. (This was a mixed religion marriage).
- Marie Felicie Morin, born 23 Jul, 1846 and christened 13 Sep, 1846 in Ascension Parish, LA. No other information.
- Marie Evelyna Morin, born 4 Feb, 1850. She married Pierre Alces Savoie on 28 Jan, 1867 at St. Theresa Church in Gonzales, Ascension Parish, LA. Her and her husband are shown on the 1882 St. Joseph church census as living in Pointe Achile, Livingston Parish, LA. Marie Evelyna died on 9 Aug, 1933 and is buried in Holy Rosary Cemetery in St. Amant, Ascension Parish, LA.
Michael had two children with his second wife, Elizabeth Sanchez, who he married on 19 May, 1880 at St. Joseph Church in French Settlement, Livingston Parish, LA. Their children were:
- Marie Dolores, born 6 May, 1879.
- Marie Louise, born 1 Dec, 1882.
The French Settlement, St. Joseph Church census from 1882 lists Michael Morin, age 68 years, and his wife Isabelle Sanchez, 40 years, Maria Dolores, 4 years, and Adam Bourgeois, 11 years. This census shows them living at Pointe Acile in Livingston Parish. The 1890 Ascension Parish census lists Michael Morin, age 75 and Elisabeth age 45, so it appears that Michael had moved to Ascention parish from French Settlement sometime between 1882 and 1890. It is not know when Michael died or where he is buried. It is also not know when Isabelle (Elizabeth Sanchez), or her children died or were buried. Our line continues through Mathieu Morin and Marie Camille Louveau. I have been unable to find much information out about Maries family, but I hope to search the New Orleans records to see if she may have come from that area. |
