Newspaper article about death of Jason Broyles

December 1917

JASON BROYLES' DEATH WAS UNDOUBTEDLY ACCIDENTAL

The overwhelming grief and horror in which the family of
Jason Broyles was shrouded at the time of our publication of the
purported facts connected with his death last week prevented a
full interview as to all the facts, and by reason of the general
impression going out that it was a case of suicide, the
(Whitney)Messenger gladly complies with the request that the
following well authenticated statements be made:
On Monday night preceding the tragic occurrence Wednesday,
Dec. 19, and while Mr. Broyles was absent from home and the elder
son, Tam, being at work in Waco, Mrs. Broyles and her daughter,
Miss Willie Maud, became alarmed by a noise outside the bed room
window, and thinking perhaps that someone was trying to break
into the house, the daughter took a pistol from the dresser
drawer with the intent to use it, if needed, on the supposed
intruder. A few moments later, however, it was idscovered that
the cause of their fright was only a piece of paper flapping in
the wind, and Miss Willie Maud put the pistol back in the drawer
without uncocking it, this thoughtless act being wholly due to
momentary excitement from the scare, and the incident was
forgotten for the time. As will be remembered in our account
last week, Mr. Broyles had just arose from bed and it seems
evident that in reaching in his dresser drawer for a shirt the
weapon was dragged forward with same and discharged. The fact
that the bullet entered below the heart ranging upward, indicates
that he was in a stooping position and confirms the belief on the
part of all who are familiar with the circumstances that the
fatal shot was accidental, and the thought that it was
intentional is dismissed with horror as a thing unthinkable.
Furthermore, it is declared by all who should be familiar with
the deceased's affairs that there was nothing either of a
financial or domestic nature that could possible have so
disturbed his peace of mind as to lead to such a desperate act as
self-destruction; that he had not recently nor in fact had ever
been in a despondent state of mind, and seemed to harbor no
secrets even from his friends, and as is well known by his every
acquaintance, he had a habit of talking freely of his personal
affairs. His mental temperament and habitually cheerful nature
would also totally preclude the idea that he could be subject to
an aberration of mind under any normal conditions, and
undoubtedly had there been any symptom of a disordered brain at
the time or immediately preceding the tragic occurrence his wife
could not have failed to notice it, as he had been eating his
breakfast and conversing with her in his usually cheerful mood
only a few moments before.
Mr. Broyles' son Tam of Waco is here for the present
settling up his father's business affairs and desires it known to
those concerned that all outstanding notes and accounts will be
payable to him at the Citizens National Bank.
