Sitting at my desk..I wondered what tomorrow would bring..my thoughts were of yesteryear..things sure had changed since this Y2K of the new millennium..
The el-nino's and the la-nino weather patterns had not helped the problems that were occurring now either..and I knew 'we' meaning my best friends and I had to do something to survive..Lucy..Evanie..and Joy were my best buddies..we all grew up together..went to school together and the same collage..we were like the three Musketeers..although there were the four of us
The world was in a shambles..people stealing..trying to find shelter..many had lost their jobs ..in months people who were rich were poor..all the predictions that were foreseen were coming true..so many scoffed at the thoughts of anything at all happening..me included to a certain extent..
Working for NASA my friends and I were more apt to have that little extra put back..We knew that something was going to happen..the secret rumors we heard through the grapevine were bound to be true..they were going to choose some of us and send us to that wondrous place Mars..
In the process of all the hidden secrets that NASA kept from the public..we knew nothing of this new program but like everyone working here we always thought there would be a way to protect and survive some of us..Scientific knowledge was the hold of and the beginning for a new start if something were to happen to our world as we knew it..
Riots were an every day occurrence..people knowing their friends for years were fighting like they hated each other..and my landlord was sure not the nicest person with me or anyone who lived in our apartment complex..
Tom the landlord sure had his hands full..he was trying to keep us save..guarding his territory and those who choose to help out..I had to give him an A for effort he sure was not giving up his turf..anytime soon!!
Today was a tiresome day..work loads had been heavy..and more rumors..today would be the day for that LIST those who would go..now this had to be true..people were working at a frenzy..and some even had brought suit cases in the hopes they would be picked..or at least on the list..it was almost like that group who committed suicide thinking of the Aliens who were waiting on the other side of the Haley's Comet..
I turned to go to my files..and Evanie rushed up to say.".we're all four on the list.." but how do you know..I asked..did you see the list.."yes..I saw it..I got the information from our supervisor..she was not suppose to let anyone know..but she did me..she is on the list too..so we're leaving in the morning..on that new ship for Mars"..
I couldn't believe it..here we four were going on the biggest adventure of our lives..would we make it..this was a bigger jump for mankind that anything ever taken before.. sending people to another planet..
Driving home..I was so keyed up..the thoughts of Mars..and all those new satellites they had been putting up for years were really forms of housing..and with water on mars..this was a thought of live for millions now..along with the provisions that have been going there for years..those who knew had been so closed mouth about all this for fear of the retaliation of the general public wanting to go..and why not this was their lives to..
I could not sleep..and woke up so often from the distant noise of sirens or a shot ringing out around the apartment complex..maybe it was good we were going..this situation was getting out of hand around here..'poor Tom' and his effort
I finally just got up..fixed a pot of coffee and sat looking around at the nice things I had worked so hard for..and wondering what I should take..Lucy had informed me that only our most personal items..everything else was provided..we were the elite group..
Getting to work was horrible..and I had to take several detours just trying to get to Joy's house to pick her up for work..people in the streets..screaming..chanting.. and just throwing anything they could get their hands on towards you..I drove faster..had to be there..and not here!!..
Meeting the girls in the break room..we all were a sight for sore eyes..no one had sleep well at all..and we were so nervous that it would have not been any use in trying...
Entering our break room our supervisor began with "Ladies" knew it had to be our latest news..now the supervisor was trying to explain as well as be calm herself and you could see the look of concern..and wonderment in her face..we all felt as she did.. here we were the chosen..to take that long walk to another life..would we make it to Mars..could we love..live..and have families there..was God giving us all another chance..we were but just a few here at this plant who would the others be?..
I picked up my jacket and walked towards the door!!!
