Ettiquette

Doll Ettiquette

( from the book: Doll Collecting for Fun and Profit by Mildred Seeley)

Knowing doll etiquette saves a collector embarrassment and give a feeling of assurance.

Do not ask friends to go along when you are invited to see someone's dolls. Viewing a collection is a honor, so treat it this way. Enjoy the dolls and compliment your hostess on ones you enjoy. When you leave, do not quote prices, numbers or makers.

Never touch another person's dolls. Do not pick up a doll, examine its body or play with its hair. Do not bring children or animals into a home with a doll collection.

Always call in advance to arrange a visit with a collector.

If you are a guest in a collector's home, do not photograph the dolls. If owners want their collection publicized, they will arrange to have them photographed.

When writing an article about someone's dolls, rules of etiquette apply. After obtaining permission for an article, let the collector read the article before submitting it to the publisher. Always ask before writing about a person's doll collection.

When attending a doll show, if you are interested in purchasing a doll ask an attendant to help you. Do not be unreasonable. Decide by looking if you are interested. Do not touch. It is acceptable to ask to look underneath the clothes. You are not the only customer, so do not ask someone to hold a doll unless you intended to buy it. Do not ask for a discount unless you are a dealer with a tax number.

When you visit a dealer shop, do not bring children or relatives with you. Ask the owner to undress only the doll you are interested in buying.

At auctions, try to see everything possible in a limited time. Try not to block the view of other prospective buyers. It is acceptable to look when a helper is showing a doll to someone else. This save everyone time.

When buying from a dealer who sells dolls through the mail, send your money immediately. Return a doll promptly if it not acceptable. Let the dealer know why you are not satisfied. You are not to purchase a doll if you do not like it. Dolls should be exactly as described. If they are not, this is reason enough to return it. You won't usually run into difficult with an established dealer if you want to return a doll. If you owe shipping charges, pay them. Dealers have right, too. Return the doll in the condition you received it. Do not remove or change anything. Pack the doll as it was packed and ship it promptly.
