THE NEWS FROM CINCINNATI

When Cincinnati's Channel 9 TV station decided to create an Internet edition of the news I decided that it would be a good way to let my far-flung children (who both have access to the Internet) to keep up on their hometown news so I added a link to it to my home page. Now, like the rest of the World Wide Web, Cincinnati's use is greatly expanded with both of our local newpapers and three of the four major TV stations sponsoring their own pages along with one from our neighbor to the north, Dayton, and two weekly papers from Oxford, the home of Miami University just up the road a piece and Fairfield which lies just north of Cincinnati. I have now reached the point where I find I am getting most of the news I get from these WWW sources - what a great way to use the old computer.

Cincinnati Channel 5
The NBC affiliate in Cincinnati became the second local TV station to have a presence on the Web.

Cincinnati Channel 9
The pioneer among Cincinnati TV stations in putting the news on the Web this ABC affiliate is probably still the best of the local TV Web pages.

Cincinnati Channel 12
After what seemed like much foot dragging this CBS affiliate has finally produced their Web page in time for the Olympics. For some reason there seems to have been a very minimum amount of publicity but I did come across a mention of it during one of the local breaks in the televising of the Games.
Channel 19, the Fox affiliate, has shown no indication that they will be joining the parade but I have to believe that it is only a matter of time.

Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati's morning newspaper - this is the one I take at home although it is more a matter of convenient timing than superior news coverage.

Cincinnati Post
And the afternoon paper. Both the Post and the Enquirer came out with their Web pages on the same day and share a common classified section - pretty much as do the hard versions.

Dayton Daily News
This from our neighbor city up I-75 a ways. DDN stole the march on the bigger city Online versions as they have been on the Web for months while the Cincinnati papers just made their appearance a short time ago.

Oxford (OH) Press
This is a typical small town weekly paper from Oxford - the home of the Miami Red Hawks - still the Redskins to us old-timers. Only a short drive from Cincinnati, Oxford is your typical college town.
Fairfield Echo
Just north of Cincinnati is the thriving and rapidly growing city of Fairfield which now has their own weekly newspaper with news of Fairfield and the surrounding territory just north of the Queen City.
I have many links to online newspapers around the world in my Hotlist but my favorite for a quick look at the news is the Boston Globe - particularly the area entitled "Breaking News" where news stories are updated every 30 minutes for national, world, business and sports as well as several other categories of lesser interest to me.

And any good news report includes the latest on the weather so here is the latest on the Cincinnati weather. In 1997 an added feature of the weather is the effect of El Nino. which affects the weather world wide, on our own weather picture. El Nino has been followed in 1998 by its counterpart, La Nina. A collection of links to various systems around the world which contain the latest news on El Nino/La Nina is maintained by the U. S. Government weather experts. Follow their predictions and compare to the actual results for the next year or so.
