Saginaw Woman Notes 100th Birthday Today
One of Saginaw's oldest residents, Mrs. Michael Casey, is celebrating her 100th birthday today. She is observing the day at the summer home of her daughter, Mrs. James Bourdow, Bay Side Park, Kawkawlin. Her three daughters -- Mrs. Boudrow with whom she resides, Mrs. Delphice Rocheleau, Windsor, Ont., and Mrs. Leland Stewart, Chicago, Ill., are on hand to help her mark the centennial anniversary. She also has eight grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Katherine O'Brien was born Aug. 6, 1853, in Syracuse, NY., and came to Saginaw as a child with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Danial O'Brien, pioneer Thomas Township residents.
She married Mr. Casey on Nov. 26, 1878. He served as a State salt inspector before his death. Mrs. Casey has spent the greater part of her life in Saginaw, except for eight years in Sandwich, Ont., where Mr. Casey went with the Saginaw Lumber & Salt Co. in 1903.
Blessed with god health throughout her life, she retains many memories of early Saginaw. She especially enjoys telling her great-grandchildren of her trips on the old stage coach from Taylor House -- now the Fordney Hotel -- to St. Louis on the old Gratiot Plank Road.
Listening to the radio is her chief pastime now. She keeps posted on the latest news and keeps a close watch for her favorite programs.
On 26 Nov 1878 when Katherine (Kate) was 25, she married Michael CASEY, son of CASEY, in Saginaw Michigan. Born in 1850 in Ireland. Immigrated bef 1878 to Saginaw Michigan. Moved in 1903 to Sandwich, Ontario. Moved in 1911 to Saginaw Michigan. Michael died in 1930 in Saginaw Michigan. Buried in St. Andrews Cemetery.
