Prior to 1840, "Canda" was the name for today's Province of Quebec. Today's Ontario was called "Upper Canada" by the British government.
In 1840, Queen Victoria decreed that today's provinces of Quebec and Ontario had been combined into one province named "Canada". Administratively, however, such as in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses, the term "Canada (Ouest)" (or Canada West) was used to identify today's Ontario.
As of July 1, 1867, the British North America Act established the "Dominion" (country) of Canada which included not only the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, but also Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and other provinces and territories as well.
Family History: James, his wife Sarah, son Alex, and daughter Barbara immigrate to Canada from Scotland in 1856. In 1871 they were living/working a 200 acre farm in Somerville, Victoria County, Ontario, Canada. Of the 200 acres, they lived on 7 acres and farmed another 37 raising mostly wheat, barley and oats.
