Jewish holidays which are characterized partially by their foods. Eating is certainly part of our culture. However, that's only one side of the picture.

Israel is supposed to be an eretz ochelet yoshveha, a land that eats its residents. Some people seem to suffer more than others. However, there has never been any doubt that it is an - it has always been a nation of eaters. Has anybody met any undernourished Israelis lately?

The nice thing about it is that there is no pressure to go on a diet. Locals talk about their weight, but many don't do much about it. Visitors from abroad are different - they hit us with the latest terrifying statistics about potential heart problems, supplemented by the latest wonder or miracle diet.

That doesn't mean that many Israelis are fat. To the contrary, the typical Israeli has benefited from a workout in the army, so most of them look like the After picture in the dieting advertisements.

You don't live in Eretz Ochelet yet? Now you know what you're missing.

That does not mean that you should eat your heart out.

Where do you want to go now?
