Why do the Salmon Need Help?
to top

In order to survive, salmon need to have a specific kind of habitat (place where they live). The water needs to be within a certain temperature range, it can't be polluted with chemicals or clouded with dirt and debris, there has to be a lot of water in the riverbed, they need calm, cool gravelly spots in which to lay their eggs, and an un-blocked way to get to and from the sea (salmon coming home from the sea are on a race against time. Their bodies can only survive in the freshwater for a limited amount of time before they die, and so they need to be able to get up the river quickly).
The rivers which salmon have lived in for centuries naturally fulfill all of these requirements, but when people came into the picture, we started changing things. We built dams to produce electricity for ourselves (blocking the rivers and changing the temperature), started making trails along riversides (causing erosion), grew lawns/gardens which required fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide (chemicals that eventually end up in streams). Now salmon need our help to get back the river that God designed them to survive in.

Why?

Create a poster that gives information about the Salmon issue. Hang it up in school.

Talk to your teachers about you making a special presentation to the class about the issue

Ask your teachers about spending some time as a class researching the issue.

Find out if the appliances and lights in the school are energy effiecient, if they aren't, talk to the principal about changing that.
