the total cost. . . some things to consider. . .
Each time we purchase an item
from a store, we are showing that we support the store from which we bought it. Whether we
want to or not, we indirectly tell the company that we like the way they are running
business.
Before we buy, we need to think about what it is that we are actually
buying, and what we are supporting by doing so. After putting on our "Amen Goggles" we might find
that attached to that latest "must have" are a few things we didn't bargain for.
Sweatshop Labor
Many companies mass-produce their products in factories which infringe on workers'
rights. Verbal abuse, sub-standard wages, physical or sexual assult, forced abortions and
an unhealthy working environment are some of the characteristics of a sweatshop. When we
buy an item manufactured in a sweatshop, we are saying "yes" to the abuse of
men, women and children.
Environmental
Degredation
Many of the processes and chemicals used to manufacture products contribute to the
destruction of the earth, and many are harmful to human health. Among other things,
non-sustainably harvested forests, pesticides, herbicides and energy-guzzling
manufacturing processes deal striking blows to our home, the earth.
Animal Cruelty
Items made with animal products often source from factory-farms whose animals are
mistreated during their lifetime. Confined to cages, artificially bred, and separated from
their young at birth, these animals are forced to live in a way completely perverted from
their true characters.
