IMPACT : WATER RESOURCES

Glaciers-
Glacier retreat is expected to increase worldwide,
and many small glaciers will disappear by the 21st
     century.

Streamflows-
Projected increases in annual mean streamflow:
          - High latitudes
          - Southeast Asia
Projected decreases in annual mean streamflow:
          - Australia
          - Central Asia
          - Mediterranean
          - Southern Africa
     Uncertain streamflows:
          - Mid-latitudes.
Streamflow during low-flow periods (such as
summer months) is projected to decrease in
     many areas due to evaporation.
Warmer temperatures would cause earlier snow
melt, causing the streamflow peak period to move
     from spring to winter.

Water Availability-

Today (year 2001) approximately 1.7 billion
people live in water-stressed areas. By 2025, this
number is projected to increase to 5 billion,
depending on the rate of population growth.

Water Demand-

Per capita, demand for water will not likely
increase, but depending on the area, agricultural
withdrawals will increase or decrease due to
     changes in precipitation/evaporation.

Water Quality-

Climate change will degrade the water quality in
     the following ways:
         - By increasing the temperature
         - Increasing sediment and pollutants in water
sources due to an increase in flooding.
