IMPACT : HUMAN SETTLEMENTS

Business/Economy-

Many economic sectors will be affected due to
     changes in resource productivity/market demand.
Settlements with little economic diversity, or those
with a great deal of climate sensitive industry
(eg agriculture, foresty, fishing, tourism) are very
     vulnerable to being disrupted.
Potential damages to infrastructure have been
projected to be tens of billions of U.S. dollars for
     individual countries.

Property-
Flooding and landslides will increase in many
areas due to changes in precipitation. This will
     cause increased property damage/loss, especially
     in costal/riverside regions.
The average annual number of people whose homes
will be flooded by costal storm surges is projected
to be about 75 to 200 million by the year 2080
(based on a mid-range sea level rise of 40 cm).
As the sea level rises, many costal settlements
will face flooding or erosion damage to their
     properties.
In developed areas of the Artic, many buildings
and transportation systems may be damaged
due to the thawing of permafrost.
