IMPACT : AGRICULTURE

CO2 Concentrations-
     Increased carbon dioxide concentrations may
enhance crop growth, but the benefit might not
overcome the adverse effects of excessive heat
     and drought.

Agricultural Methods/Practices-
Climate change will require that agricultural
     methods and practices (planting dates,
     fertilization/irrigation rates, and species selection)
     change in many areas.
If all agricultural systems are sucessfully able to
adapt to climate change, the effects are expected
to be positive for less than a few °C, and negative
for more than a few °C (In the mid-latitudes).
If agricultural systems are unable to adapt to
climate change, there will be negative results
regardless of the amount of warming.

Crop Yields-

A general decrease in crop yields is projected for
     the following areas:
          Tropical/Subtropical regions
Mid-latitudes (if warming is more than a few °C)
A general increase in crop yields is projected for
     the following areas:
Mid-latitudes (if warming is les than a few °C)

Food Costs-
Most studies show that along with a temperature
increase of a few °C comes an increase in food
     prices.

Hunger-
Climate change will increase the number people
with hunger risk, especially in developing countries.
Climate change will lessen food security in Africa.

Pests/Weeds-
Climate change will increase the range of some
insects and weeds. This may have a negative
effect on some crops and decrease overall yield.
