Click-o-mania Web editor - Here's a fine, freeware HTML editor that offers loads of features and is aimed at the intermediate to advanced Web author. Features lots of keyboard shortcuts, FTP capability, a "frames wizard," a good search-and-replace function, color checking for HTML coding and an "auto save" feature. If you're used to editing text with WordPad or Notepad, you'll find that the same hot keys work here, too. 430 kilobytes. (For Windows 98/95).

 

HTML Constellation - A welcome new addition to the ranks of free Web editors, HTML Constellation offers loads of features to help you easily create tables, frames, forms, rules, meta tags and more. FTP Commander - A basic, easy-to-use freeware FTP client. Offers all the functions of the Web's most popular FTP client, WS_FTP, except that this is unconditionally free. You can delete, rename and copy files, as well as create and delete directories on the FTP server.

 

Monica - We've had a number of requests from visitors for a good freeware FTP and HTTP download client for the Mac. Monica fits the bill nicely. Monica lets you easily set up a download queue. Once you've placed some files in the queue you may manually start each download at a time convenient to you. Monica restarts incomplete downloads if the server times out. (For Macs). 800 kilobytes.

WebUpdate Pro - A powerful, freeware Web site upload utility that lets you update your Web pages without the hassle of using an FTP client to manually upload each site. WebUpdate Pro lets you transfer up to seven files at the same time and offers an easy-to-use interface. It also lets you download entire sites, as well as create backups of sites.  Aureate Go!Zilla Free Edition - Go!Zilla is a Freeware Internet utility that helps users manage their downloads. Search for files, find mirror sites, and automatically schedule and resume broken downloads.

LeechFTP - There's a lot of good freeware out there for every purpose. But quality free FTP clients are rare. LeechFTP fills the void with a strong package offering many bells & whistles. Bounce Spam Mail - Fed up with spammers? Here's a handy little freeware utility that lets you send fake bounce messages to spammers that make it appear as though your E-mail address is invalid (so you won't wind up on their mailing lists). 277 kilobytes. (For Windows 98/95).

 

Outlook Messenger Express - If you're using Microsoft Outlook 97or 98, then you'll find this freeware utility very helpful. Outlook Messenger Express lets you quickly and easily send a message without going to the hassle of loading the cumbersome Outlook program itself. You can minimize it to the Windows desktop tray when you're not using it, as well. (For Windows: 2.7 megabytes).

 

Free Outlook Mail stationery - We've had a number of requests lately from visitors using Outlook Express Mail, asking where they can get custom stationery to liven up their correspondence. This is the place to go. Here, you'll find a wonderful collection of free themed stationery for use on Outlook/Outlook Express Mail. Each self-installing package includes beautiful scrolling backgrounds, and some include music. (These files are for Outlook Express running on Windows 98/95. They won't work on Outlook Express for the Mac).

 

PureVoice Player/Recorder - This free application offers a player and recorder for voice messages that you can use with your E-mail software. PureVoice offers excellent sound quality and its files are 10 times smaller than WAV files. There's a plug-in specifically for Eudora software, and a separate application for other E-mail products.

 

E-mail Remover - A free program that helps you avoid having to download unwanted E-mail and spam over your Net connection. It lets you preview mail headers and delete unwanted E-mail right away (without having to download the E-mail first). Helpful!

 

Spammer Slammer - If you've spent very long on the Net, you've no doubt been the victim of a spammer (someone who sends unsolicited junk E-mail.) Now you can fight back with this cool program, called Spammer Slammer. It's an easy-to-use client that works with any POP3 e-mail software. It also works for multiple accounts on the same machine. Another plus: there's no blacklist, huge domain lists, or spammer list to maintain.

 

Pegasus Mail - One of the Net's all-time classic freeware products, Pegasus has a very strong following, and with good reason. It has tons of helpful features, including a spell checker, multiple signatures, checking of multiple mailboxes, etc. However, Pegasus does suffer from a few drawbacks. We find its interface a little clunky and its cut & paste capabilities are limited. If you download Pegasus, then be sure to check out the Guide to Pegasus Mail Add-ons, which is a good collection of enhancement programs for this E-mail client. (Available for Windows, MS-DOS, Macs, and Mercury).

Info-ZIP - This is a free ZIP utility that supports command line parameters and saves long file names. "Info-ZIP's purpose is to provide free, portable, high-quality versions of the Zip and UnZip compressor-archiver utilities that are compatible with the DOS-based PKZIP by PKWARE, Inc."

Aladdin Expander - The classic free decompression tool for the Mac is now available for Windows users. An easy-to-use utility, Aladdin Expander can handle any type of compressed file you throw at it, including Stuffit. (.sit) and ZIP files. It'll also handle uuencoded (.uue), BinHex (.hqx), and MacBinary (.bin), ARC (.arc), Arj (.arj), and gzip (.gz) formats. (For Windows 95/98/NT and Macs).

PowerZip - If you're new to downloading files from the Net, you've likely noticed that many of them are in compressed or "ZIP" form. To use these files, you need an unzipping utility. PowerZip is one of the best we've seen; it's speedy, efficient, and features an easy-to-use interface. The latest version features built-in multi-disk ZIP support and ZIP encryption and decryption support. PowerZip is now free only for students and nonprofit groups.

ChatMail - Here's a handy server-based freeware chat application that allows you to chat, as well as and leave messages for others. It will also notify you when your friends connect to the Net. ChatMail can be used like a news server, displaying public messages. It lets you interact with others (while keep your identity private). It works through firewalls, too. 373 kilobytes. (For Windows 98/95).

 

XiRCON free chat client - This is a new free beta program that is highly configurable and easy to use. Many features, including an excellent interface and the ability to instantly minimize itself to the Windows tray. It also automatically remembers your favorite servers, channels and chat buddies. Also supports connection to many servers at once, without launching a separate copy of the program. Screenshot here.

 

Microsoft NetMeeting - With this cool program, you can hold "virtual meetings." NetMeeting offers various tools to communicate and collaborate with others on the Web. It lets you hold voice and video conferences, share software applications, chat, and share a whiteboard.

 

Visual IRC - Powerful freeware chat client that features an Office 97-like user interface, voice chat and video conferencing. Visual IRC also offers an object-oriented scripting language (ViRCScript) and support for Active Scripting. Suitable for newbies and experiences users alike. The Web's top IRC client.

 

Microsoft V-Chat - With this awesome client, you start by selecting an "avatar," (a graphical representation for yourself.) With your avatar you can chat, gesture, or explore 2D or 3D environments. Choose from a wide selection of avatars or make your own.

 

irc.ram-page.com - Here's a promising, fast-growing free IRC server that offers access via either the Web or an IRC client (such as mIRC) They also offer a free service that lets Webmasters easily set up a chat room on their own page. Note: they do not allow porn or warez (illegally pirated software).

 

PowWow - PowWow is a popular Windows-based communications program for the Internet that allows up to 9 users to chat via typing or voice; send files; view personal home pages and JPEG pictures; and cruise the Web together.

 

Kids PowWow - This is a version of PowWow for children up to age 13. It creates a fun, but protective environment for kids who want to use PowWow. Kids PowWow alerts children when an adult pages them, or when they page an adult. The PowWow for Kids home page provides conferences (which have profanity filters) and other features.

 

ichat Pager - With this cool client, you can be instantly connected to friends and associates and see who's on line. You may send messages instantly; participate in real-time discussions; and page friends 24 hours a day.

 

Active Worlds Browser -This is one of the all-around coolest freebies on the Web. It's a browser that lets you access AlphaWorld, a unique, 3D virtual community populated by real people. The Active Worlds universe boasts hundreds of thousands of users and thousands of kilometers of virtual territory. You can explore over 100 worlds in real-time, 3D, high-color graphics. You can even "own" land and build anything you'd like on your property, from a simple house to an elaborate palace (a process that is quite easy). Active Worlds is more than a piece of software; it's a way of life! (Note: you need a Pentium with Win 95/NT and 24 megs of hard drive space.)

 

AOL Instant Messenger - This excellent program, once available only to AOL users, is now available to the entire online community. It offers many cool features. It allows you to see who's currently online and lets you send quick and private instant messages. It's "faster than E-mail and more fun than the phone."

McAfee Clinic - The anti-virus software company McAfee is now offering an online, free virus detection service that'll check your PC and remove all viruses. There are several other free service here, as well, including a "2000 ToolBox Online," which can check and fix potential Year 2000 issues on your PC. There's also a service called "Uninstaller QuickClean," which can clear out unneeded files from your hard disk to improve its performance and capacity. Requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 or more recent. (This service is free for now, but McAfee intends to begin charging for it in the future).

HouseCall online virus scanning - Here's a free service that offers online virus scanning. There's nothing to install; just follow the simple instructions. Developed by Trend Micro, HouseCall scans for and cleans viruses via the Web through ActiveX and Java technology. An advantage to this service is that it's always up-to-date. This is a big plus, when you consider that hundreds of new viruses emerge every week, thus making regular anti-virus programs quickly obsolete.

Anyware Antivirus - An excellent free utility, Anyware will scan your computer for viruses (and let you delete any infected files). Anyware detects all the latest viruses, including Polymorph, Stealth, Trojan Horse, Multi-Partite, E-mail, Internet and macro viruses. Note: this free utility is a scanner only; for virus-cleaning capabilities, you must upgrade to the commercial product. Available for Windows and DOS.

F-PROT antivirus utility - Data Fellows is giving away the DOS version of their excellent F-PROT anti-virus utility. This version is free for home users.

Bootminder - (Direct download: 106 kilobytes). This free utility will warn you if a floppy is in your A: drive when closing down Windows. This way, you won't start up with the floppy still in it. Result: no boot-virus infection. Bootminder runs in the background until you forget to remove your floppy. For Windows.

Worm.ExploreZip utility - The latest major virus (actually, technically, a "worm,") that is wreaking havoc on the Net is a nasty program called "Worm.ExploreZip." Symantec Corp., makers of antivirus programs, is offering a free utility to remove an active Worm.ExploreZip infection from a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT computer. (48 kilobytes).

InoculateIT anti-virus utility - Here's an easy-to-use, powerful freeware anti-virus program. InoculateIT automatically detects and cleans conventional file and boot sector viruses as well as macro viruses that infect Office 95, Office 98, and Office 2000 Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Access databases. Software updates and virus signature updates are free, as well. (For Windows 98/95 and NT).
