Ten Steps to Giving a Good Speech

�Write the purpose of your speech down in one sentence.
Evaluate your audience%u2019s knowledge of the subject. What do they know? Or what do you think they want to know?
Evaluate your knowledge of the subject. What do you know on the topic?
Determine what you are going to present and do your research.
Determine logistics. Speech length? How many people? What is the room like? Is there A/V equipment available? Do you need handouts?
Write the speech. Remember to include an opening, body and conclusion. Include opportunities to use your voice, hand gesture and illustrative language.
Practice the speech in front of others. Get their feedback and make changes as required. Remember to include the timing.
Prepare your introduction and get it to the Toastmaster.
Arrive to the speech site early. Determine if there have been any changes. Get used to the room. Try out the A/V equipment.
After the introduction, relax, take a couple of seconds and a deep breath and go for it. Remember that attitude is everything, it can be fun if you want it to be fun.

�Write down the purpose of the speech in no more then one sentence.

Re-write the purpose of your speech in no more then one sentence.
Write down three supporting arguments and explain each. You have just created the body of the speech.
Write down your purpose once again and list the supporting three arguments with minimum details. You have just completed the conclusion of the speech.
Write down the purpose a third time and include an attention getting device (a question, a story, whatever). This will be your opening.
Re-write the speech out in its entirety.
Practice your speech for timing in front of a mirror and make changes.
Practice your speech for content in front of others and make changes.
Practice, practice, practice.
