GROUNDWATER AND ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION AND ITS PROBLEMS*)

Oleh : Soetrisno S.

ABSTRACT

Groundwater and environment interaction is basically occurred since earth has been created. This interaction is a natural process to achieve its balance.

The process of interaction is lasted in the hydrology cycle, involving directly or indirectly all environment components and factors of groundwater occurrence. The environment changes will give impacts to groundwater occurrence, both quantity and quality.

Human interventions to environment is an action to the process of interaction and may create a reaction from environment and its components. A negative reaction may rise environment and groundwater problems.

Environment problems are changes of climate, morphology. land uses and vegetation, while in groundwater side are lowering of water level, water quality deterioration, salt water intrusion and land subsidence. Both problems from environment and groundwater sides interact and may create a downward spring effect. This effect should be halted by positive human interventions which are efforts to restore or even to enhance environment quality and quantity of groundwater.

Those efforts amongst other are providing reliable legal frame works, decentralization, public and private sector participation, conjunctive use, recharge areas protection, demand management approach, existing precise, accurate, reliable, standardized and sustainable groundwater data and information, and to educate people to understand and to appreciate groundwater.
