Scannable Keyword Resumes

Back To - Lists

The KEYWORD rsum style incorporates a keyword summary into traditional resume style (see below). It is the keyword element that makes your resume electronically retrievable in resume databases. It is also the keyword element that gives viewers the opportunity to assess your skills and qualifications at a glance when using a Web resume or paper resume.

Some Advantages:
Takes advantage of scanning and database technology
A plus for those individuals who have an established work history
Provides the context from which to search for your resume in a database
Takes advantage of Web-based search engine technology

Some Disadvantages:
The selection and order of keywords are extremely subjective
Can discriminate against individuals with little or no work experience
Can discriminate against individuals with an established work history, but with outdated skills

Standard Resume Contents

HEADING INFORMATION

The heading information on your resume should contain your contact information.(see Skills Inventory Forms). Usually this would include your name, address, phone numbers, and your e-mail address if you have one.

SUMMARY

This statement replaces the outdated and limiting 'OBJECTIVE'. It is your personal preference whether to include a summary or not. Where the OBJECTIVE limited your opportunities, a well written SUMMARY will open the number of positions you will be considered for by a prospective new employer. The Summary should be brief and to the point, and include yet another set of important keywords.

EMPLOYMENT DATA

Employment data documents your employment history, providing specific information that identifies the types of jobs you had, for whom, where, and when, and includes the following:

Name of Employer
Location of Employer (City, State)
Dates Employed
Job Title

Your employment data should also include other relevant work experience that may demonstrate your professional development, but in non-related areas.

FORMAL EDUCATION & SPECIALIZED TRAINING

Formal education is characterized by the award of an accredited degree or certificate, and includes the following information:

Degree or Certificate Earned

Name of Institution

Location of Institution (City and State)

Major Area of Study;

Date of Completion (unless age is a negative factor)

Specialized training includes training that was received in seminars, workshops, on-the-job training, and other in-house training programs for which no specific accredited degree or certificate was awarded. However, this training is important to professional development and indicates training that supports your job objective. You should include the following information about your specialized training.

Name of Training Received

Name of Organization that Provided the Training

Date of Completion

PERSONAL DATA

Personal Data has no business on a resume. The inclusion of the wrong type of information here can cause your resume to be put to the side until the H-R Dept. gets an opportunity to cut it or block it out before passing it along to a hiring manager. A company is in jeopardy of violating EEO/AA laws if the wrong personal information is passed along to the management. (I know you sent it and want it read. But the laws don't allow the H-R departments to make that assumption.) Rather than take the chance, most H-R Departments will just block out any personal information. But until they can do that, your resume sits on the "THINGS TO DO TODAY" pile.
