In a larger sense, we cannot dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow -- this life. The brave woman who struggled here has consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what she did. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated to the great tasks remaining before us -- that we here highly resolve that she shall not have died in vain. Princess Diana was many things to many people. To me, she was a celebrity, an icon, but most of all she was a mother. I didn't realize how much I thought of her until I found out she was dead, and then, I couldn't believe how much I missed someone I didn't even know! But that was Diana's strength. She communicated to people, not just by words, but through her presence, through her touch. She wasn't afraid to touch children, the sick, or just shake hands without wearing gloves. Love, communication, understanding...these are her legacy.
Princess Diana suffered much from an unfaithful husband, an unrelenting press and public, and a seemingly cold and unforgiving royal family. I say seemingly because they have now forgiven her. I don't think they hated her as much as they let on...but it was a little too late. I hope she realizes what an impact she had on this world, which will be better for having kept her here, if only for a little while.
