The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

NeuFutur #1 - Stupid kids will produce stupid zines. One breaks his hand punching mulch, another gets in trouble at school for mean pranks. Things that weren't necessarily stupid, but I still didn?t like, include a half-story about a beat-up junkie goth, two pieces on Christian music, and an interview with Jeremy gloff.

NeuFutur #2 - This is a completely computer-created zine, which works in terms of it looking all snazzy and professional, but lacks the warmth and friendliness I get from cut-n-paste jobs. It wouldn't be so bad if the writing was a bit less formal but I'm afraid reading neufutur just left me cold. That said, if you're a serious kinda person and like rants about activism, apathy, and education, then this is the zine for you.

NeuFutur #2 - Small, a5 black and white punk zine - with a weird layout which ensures that it has to be read back to front to make sense. The left handed issue? Pretty good overall, features on the top 10 worst songs ever featuring Green day, madonna, and the offspring, as well as reviews, rants on apathy and education and general american punkdom. I think it needs a few more british contacts, so get trading with him. Pretty good.

NeuFutur #5 - This issue gravitates around James' love for rocky horror and its sequel, shock treatment. This issue is typed, which makes it super easy to read unlike the earlier hand-written issue. Though devoted to rocky horror, there are other aspects of the zine like the harsh zine reviews, a continued Sion's story, and an interview with John Murdoch. Didn't interest me much because it's specific in tastes, but was still a wonderful zine. 4/5 stars,

NeuFutur #5 - This zine is a bit controversial - it includes a story by Mark Underwood that includes a gruesome description of a rape, and a piece on Ohio's Anti-GLBT Bill (although james doesn't support it). Overall though, this is an interesting read. Shock Treatment is sort of a sequel to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, so their is a piece on that, as well as on an alleged script for a third movie, Revenge of the Old Queen, and a RHPS/Shock Treatment knowledge game, which could result in a prize for anyone who answers all ten questions correctly. Also, zine and record reviews and a bit of personal writing.

NeuFutur #6 - Lots o good stuff: guerrilla copy editing (useful to zinesters!), the Employee Non-Discrimination Act, zine reviews, making an electric bicycle, Jack Chick, Vox info, a Maurice Manning review, music reviews, personal writing, + more. A very good zine by any standards.

NeuFutur #7 - Another rad publication from a cool guy. Read all about: the Domestic Partnership Bill, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, music reviews, a Hissyfits interview (this is a very cool girl pop punk type band - the interview rocked), and another diy file, this one about red boxing, which is technically illegal, yes, but I won't deny that it's probably damn helpful too. Also, Pops That Flopped, a funny acount of major soda companies' attempts to come up with 'cool' new flavors etc, zine reviews, and personal writings. One of my favorite parts is the cute mini comic-type zine that comes with #7, titled "Polar Bears Luv..." So if you've ever wondered what polar bears love (and even something that they don't love!) this will put yr mind at ease.

NeuFutur #7 - 24 pages, digest size, copied, perzine. With NeuFutur James pulls together an assemblage of topics to comprise a neat little perzine that's also part info zine. On the personal side James lays out where his zine is going and gives a short rundown on the evolution of the NeuFutur website. James also provides a list of his likes and dislikes, and two top ten lists of songs. Making the transition into info mode, James includes a lot of detailed data on such things as failed softdrinks (or pop, or soda, or whatever you call it in your neck of the woods), he also gives the run down on the Domestic Partnership Bill, provides a brief overview of the movie Hedwig and the Angry Inch, supplies all the info you need to make your own red box so you too can make free phone calls from pay phones, and last James sits down with one of my favorite groups, The Hissyfits! And, just in case that wasn't enough, James' kid sister tosses in a pocket size comic about polar bear luv! This zine was fun to read, taught me some stuff I didn't know, and has that cut-n-paste on a collage look that I personally like in a zine!
