DIY files, Part II: The Electric Bicycle (by JMcQ)

Hi, all. Hopefully you all got some good ideas from the guerrila copy-editing piece. This piece will have some other practical ideas, but in a different vein. The common consensus is that cars are a necessary evil, but that is a complete myth. Sure, having a car is a luxury and it definitely eases transportation, but at such a high cost. I was kicking an idea around in my head, and I recently talked to my father, the local electronics genius. With a few caveats, he told me that this idea would be feasible. Since this can be made into reality, I feel right presenting this idea to you. I have no patent for this idea, so if you do become rich off this idea, kick me a few extra bucks.

Step one: Get a bicycle. If you have a graphite-composite bike, that is even better. The bike should be as light as you can make it, so shuck off the mirrors, tassels, and any extra metal parts off the front. Also, if you have one the old style bikes with the metal shelf off the back, keep the shelf. It will be very handy later.

Step Two: Go to Radio Shack and by a generator, an electric battery, an electric motor, and a rheostat, also buy the proper connector cords. Also, get a charger compatible with the battery. Remember, compatibility us incredibly important. Make sure you have a game plan when you go into the electronics store, or ask someone knowledgeable about what parts would be optimum on the bike.

Step Three: Place the generator on the back wheel, which will make the ride easier on you. Put the electric motor in the bottom of the crotch of the bike, banding it in such a way that it doesnt interfere with the mechanical parts of the motor but still keeping it in place and keeping it away from your decidedly more valuable legs. Next, extend the rheostat to include all if the right handle. This can be dome by loosening up the grips and attaching the rheostat to it, you can also go and buy a whole assembly of rheostat handlebar, but what type of DIY person would you be if you resorted to that?

Step Four : Finally, start the electric battery onto the back shelf of the bicycle, linking all of the connections. You can do one of two things now: ride you bike for a long-ass time, or go the non-environmental route and charge it. After it is done charging, you can go do all of your favorite activist events without feeling shitty that you have just used 8 gallons of gas driving town in your Moms SUV (which you borrowed, admit it!).
