Student
Gateway
to the Internet
Just a few pieces of advice, students, before you go
exploring the internet:
1. Never
give
personal information about yourself on-line, especially last names,
addresses, or phone numbers. Others may want that information so
they
can either send you junk mail or pretend to be you (this is called
identity theft). Be wary of anyone who asks for this information.
2. If a little flashing window or banner on your screen pops up telling
you that you have won something, ignore it.
This is a way to get your personal information (see above).
Usually you only have a chance of winning, or that shipping charges are
more than the cost of the prize. Sometimes they just don't
send the prize. This is called fraud. Farud is illegal in
the United States, but not
every country has those laws to protect you. The net spans the
globe with people advertising on sites that may not be in your nation.
3. Never search for something on the net that you wouldn't be proud to
show you parents or teachers. Even if you wipe out the history on
your web browser, there are ways to find out where you've been, like
the way they're looking over your shoulder right now (ha, fooled
you!). If you have any doubts, ask an adult. If nothing
else, it will keep you from getting in trouble if a link takes you
somewhere unexpected.
4. Always confirm research information with more than one
website. Even the most reliable source can make a mistake or
typo, and some sites deliberately
distort the truth. It is also a good idea to note the URL
(website address) and when it was last updated. In fact, this is
good advice for any kind of research.
5. Use your common sense and have fun. The world wide web is a
wonderful resource, and can give hours of fun. If something looks
fishy, question it or don't do it. If we teachers didn't trust
your common sense, you would not be on this computer. Please
prove our trust in you is correct.
