Spelling Games

Bespelled - http://zone.msn.com/en/bespelled/default
This is a good, turn-based game, so no timer will ever force you to play fast.  Make words from tiles near each other, and you get extra points for longer words, special color tiles, or for making specific words.  The game ends if a flaming tile gets to the bottom of the board.  Great game!

Scrabble Rack Attack! - http://zone.msn.com/en/scrabblerack/default.htm
This exciting game is based in timed rounds, with each round requiring more points scored each round.  You move a number of tiles around on your holder (much like real Scrabble) to create words.  It has a diagram above it to tell you how many words of each leangth can be made.  You get a nice bonus for getting all the words of a certain length.  This is a solid game that rewards quick thinking and gives good targets to work for.

Text Twist - http://zone.msn.com/en/texttwist/default.hhtm
Text Twist is a fun game, but has a few draw backs.  Featuring 6 or 7 letters, players score points for each word they make, seeking to make the major word, using all the letters.  You can not advance to the next round without getting the big word, and with only 3 minutes to work with, this can be very tough for younger children.  This also is tough because some of the larger words tend to be less well known.  Few adults I know can regularly go beyond level 3.  It's a good game, but not for those who discourage easily.

WHATword? - http://zone.msn.com/en/whatword/default.htm
This is an inovative game wonderful for the beginner and the expert.  The board in this game is 5 by 5, and the player can switch any two letters on the board.  You don't even have to score a word with every move.  To advance to the next round, you have to form the "WHATword" or words in each puzzle.  This can be easy, or quite difficult depending on the word or situation (for instance, scoring mitts, without getting mitt scored and taken away first).  You have a time limit to form the word, keeping excitement in the game.  Once you get used to the style of play, it can be quite addicting.  Very good game, especially for students with a good spacial intelligence!

Word Mojo - http://zone.msn.com/en/wordmojo/default.htm
This game is similar to solo Scrabble, but with a serious twist.  In the time limit, you get to put down words from the six racks of tiles you get onto the crossword in a set amount of time.  Then, to help score a few extra points, you can try to makie a word out of the letter tiles you placed on the colored spots on the crossword, adding another level of strategy to the game.  You advance to the next round by scoring enough points to advance.  Fun game.
