Campus Events from Summer 2003

Summer at Dartmouth was a summer like any other full of barbeques and good times. Among casual dance parties and fraternity outreach programs, the Psi chapter held a BBQ for prospective students to show them that even in the summer time Latino life is alive and well on Dartmouth's campus. Several of the Hermanos who were off campus for the summer met up in New York City for a national summit to discuss the next year of the Psi chapter with National LUL. For many of the newest Hermanos, it was their first of many National summits to come.

Campus Events for Fall 2003

This term the Psi Chapter undergraduate Hermanos are helping the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon Sorority, Alpha Beta colony, put on RAICES. RAICES is a whole week of programming on women's studies that includes guest speakers, movie nights, and mediated discussions. The biggest event of the term is the fifth annual Noche Dorada. This year's speaker is Professor Christina Gomez and scheduled for an audience of 400 people, ten percent of the whole campus, plus two Alumni, Hermanos Omar and Ali Rashid, as well as their parents.

Our Fifth Annual Noche Dorada in Collis Common Ground was a culmination not only of a campus-wide celebration of National Hispanic/Latino Heritage, but of nearly seven years of La Unidad Latina at Dartmouth. During my time in Hanover, meeting with Alumni, administrators, faculty and undergraduates, I was struck by how far we have come and by how much potential there is for the future of our organization. The weekend began with our Board of Trustee lunch at the Hanover Inn where Alumni relations Director Nels Armstrong ’71 welcomed us “home” and requested that as long as our stay at Dartmouth was that we treat it as such. I reflected a great deal on my good friend’s kind greeting and warm request. As I made my way across campus, my feet shuffling the autumn foliage on the ground, my face chilled by the cool NH October breeze, my ears adjusting to the constant buzz of my shoes crunching the granite with each step, wearing my letters and my Cuban flag as I follow the story of Orozco’s murals, reflecting on Hermano Ernesto Cuevas’ art in the Latino House – I realized that I was home. Our house is in order and we have strong plans for expansion. The future is now.
