He returned from War and found his wife married to another. Under such cases, the woman would not be guilty of bigamy, and Myrtle was given the choice of which husband she would remain with. Myrtle decided to remain with her second husband Jim Strange.

They had the following children:

George was raised in the countryside near an area called Round Plains, which is located a two miles west of Waterford, Ontario in Norfolk County.

George's father died when he was just two. When his mother died he was left an orphan at age five and was taken in by a family by the name of MacDonald who lived in Norwich, Oxford, Ontario. They had a daughter named Flossie.  He also was partially raised by his sister Myrtle.

He served in the Armed Forces in World War I and was stationed in England for a short period of time before the war ended. His ship was quarantined for several weeks at the docks due to an outbreak of measles. By the time the men were released for duty, the war was over and they never saw action. He returned on the ship named the "Belgic". He returned apparently to Toronto, Ontario to 127 Greenwood Ave probably where his sister lived.

A couple years after returning to Canada, he married Catherine Isabelle Robertson. He managed a farm owned by his father-in-law Alexander Robertson on Lot 19 Concession 4 East Oxford Township, Oxford County, Ontario. George was a herdsman and doctored his own animals as well. His barn was kept very clean, white washed inside, constantly swept and watered down. The milking machines were scalded before each use, something unheard of at the time in the area. He wore white coveralls during milking and also while working on the animals.

He always said what was good medicine for cows, horses, chickens and pigs was also good for cats, dogs and his kids. He was always kidded by the other farmers in the area for keeping such clean stalls and animals, they said it was too much work and got him nothing. During a outbreak of tuberculous, nearly all the farms in the area had their cattle exterminated, George's was one of few spared. After their herd's death, George loaned out some of his milk cows to the very farmers who kidded him, so that their children could drink milk. He was never kidded again.

George must have had a sense of humour. One day, the kitchen was just cleaned and scoured by Belle his wife and the floor was still wet, in came George with his shoes still on, followed by every one of the kids on the back of a horse, covered with mud from the field. George not concern one bit, proceeded to march them around the table, the kids laughing and Belle getting madder every second. Belle chased them out with the corn broom, even 50 years later Belle would still get mad recalling the tale.

George and Belle's marriage did not survive. They were separated for more that 40 years, they were apart by 1934 when Goldie their daughter passed away. George eventually moved to Kitchener, Ontario about 1958 living at 35 Kings Street West later by 1963 lived at 25 B College St. and still later living at 145 Kings St. W. apt #4. He found employment as a photographer and after retirement worked at the United taxi company in Kitchener, Ontario. At the time of his death he lived at 119 College St., Kitchener, Ontario, shortly before that lived at 140 Webert St #203.

In his seventies George developed Sugar Diabetes and had emphysema. One bitterly cold day on his way to get milk at a variety store on King Street in Kitchener, Ontario, he suffered an emphysema attack. A taxi driver grabbed him and took him to the hospital, he passed away on the way there. His Obituary states "A member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 50, Kitchener and Airforce Club."

George married 1, 2, 3, 4Catherine Isabelle (Belle) ROBERTSON "Belle", daughter of Alexander Dougal (Sandy or Alex) ROBERTSON "Sandy" and Julia May (Jewel) CHANCE "Jewel", on 30 Jul 1921 in First Baptist Parsonage, Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario. Belle was born 5 24 Jul 1899 in Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario. She died 6 19 Sep 1989 in Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario and was buried 7 22 Sep 1989 in Baptist Cemetery, Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario.
Belle grew up in Woodstock, Ontario. She was called Belle short for Isabelle. She didn't use her first name until very late in life and was quite happy to hear people call her Catherine. She was named Catherine after her great grandmother Catherine Everett and Isabelle after her grandmother Isabella Bell. She was born on Houser's Lane [now James St., Woodstock, Ontario] in a house not far from where her mother was born.

As a child, she was not able to attend school due to ill health, so she took art lessons from a friend of the family, Jennie Hart. Belle was very talented as an artist. Her pictures are a cherished possession in the family.

She was engaged to a young soldier but broke it off and instead she married George Gable, he also a soldier. When George returned from England after the War was over they resumed dating and eventually married in 1921. Bell having a complete set of furniture needed little to setup house keeping, she said George only brought his suitcases. Their daughter Goldie was born prematurely a few months later.

Bell and George had five children, the oldest a girl named Goldie died at the age of twelve of spinal meningitis (she mourned her death all for the next 55 years until her own death). Her second child Ruth was born as her husband was running to the nearest phone 2 miles down the road to get the local doctor. (Her sister Velma said that nothing seemed to bother Belle and that she was "one tough cookie"). When her husband and the doctor arrived, she was in bed warm and content holding the new born child that she had delivered herself along with a then 9 year old sister Velma.

They lived in the countryside at Cooley Pond near Muir, Ontario and before that in East Oxford Township south of Woodstock, Ontario and where they farmed.

The marriage did not survive, yet they didn't divorce, but were separated for more than 40 years. Belle had a hard few years, raising 5 children, each child with health concerns, the oldest (Goldie) dying, the next oldest (Ruth) on crutches, the third (Ralph) burned, the next (Doug) with bowel problems and the youngest (Harold) not able to walk or speak properly until aged four. Belle's parent took in Ruth the oldest and cared for her for some years, the boys remained with their mother.

Belle raised her children well and later took care of her parents when they were older. One day she was with her father sitting in the living room. Her father was working with papers and a dollar bill dropped to the floor, he told her sharply "Belle pick up that dollar". Suprised at the tone she did and gave it to him. He then sweetly said "thank you, you have just bought your new house." The house bought was at 555 Mary St., Woodstock, Ontario and after the death of her father lived there till the end of her life.

She loved telling of her family stories and knew of many of the family members in Ontario and many of the stories preserved were told by her mother. Crocheting was a speciality of hers and many afgans are with family members as well as quilts.  Her "crazy" quilts were created from bits of clothing salvaged from pajamas, shirts, curtains and the like. At her house on Mary St. she had a area of rasberries and every year made jam and always put up preserves. Washing was done in an ancient wringer washer from the 1930's up until the 90's, hung to dry in the basement or on the line out back.

One time one her grandchildren heard her say that she wished the had a toad for the garden to keep the insects down and one was found and brought to her.  She named him and put him at the shed and she always said he always did his job. Her cat "Timmy" was company for years, it seems that every cat she ever had was name "Timmy".

Belle often had boarders in her three bedroom house and one stayed for a number of years. Mr. Ross always amused the grandchildren by eating his peas on his knife, each pea lined up perfectly. Afterwards he treated the children to a "Taverner's" fruit candy. After Mr. Ross passed away as well as the cat, she lived alone quite contently.

In her mid-eighties her health weakened and she depended on her family for minor help, until then she cut her own grass shovelled the snow and cared for the large garden. She lived at her home on her own until her death. She celebrated her 90th birthday with an open house, where many of her friends and family came and joined in the celebration. Lively and happy she welcomed her guests.

Just 4 days later, she arranged with the men who were laying new sidewalks outside her home to have her own sidewalk laid. She paid them and immediately they started work and began to breakup her walkway. She became ill, an ambulance was called and she was carried over her sidewalk (which was being poured with concrete) to the hospital. She passed away a few weeks later never seeing the finished sidewalk. She was buried beside her daughter Goldie who died in 1934.

Muir Child Passes Following Operation

Muir May 21. - (From our own correspondent) - Regret was general here on receipt of news of the death of little Goldie Marion Gable in Woodstock General hospital. The child was a pupil of Muir school until about a month ago when illness forces her to leave Thursday, at Woodstock she underwent a mastoid operation, passing away that evening. Surviving are her mother and father, a sister and three brothers, who reside on the Thompson farm on the Stage road. A sad feature of the case is that the day of the child's death a public appeal was made through the press to locate her father, George Wyatt Gable, whose whereabouts has not been ascertained. The funeral was held Saturday from Meadow's funeral home, Woodstock.
