FOOTBALL SINGAPORE
Singapore
National Team

Singapore is no football powerhouse and has never won any International honors. The closest it came to winning anything were the three silver medals they won in the South East Asian Games.

A regular cannon fodder in the international arena, the National soccer team has been continously reaching new depth of low over the past years.

The man under fire is National team coach Barry Whitbread. The team just cannot seems to be able to attack, let alone score goals under his charge.

The main culprit however has to be the National association, FAS. Two key failures stood out like a sore thumb.

The first was the decision to sign three foreigners during Singapore final years of the  Malaysian League campaign. This move left local players on the bench. Missing the opportunity to groom and hone their skill against quality opposition, the result is years of international embrassement..

The second is the virtual total neglect of youth development. Players were coming into the international arena lacking basic skill and experience.

But the worst seems to be over with the introduction of the professional football league in 1996. Promising young players are emerging by the dozens. In fact they appeared so good that many outshined the national players that experts always thought were the cream of the nation.

However one big problem still remains. In the league, clubs are playing local strikers out of position or leaving them on the bench to accomodate quality foreigners. Without the chance to play they will never be able effective in the tougher international field.
If this issue is not look into, (and it really does not appeared to be look into), the National team will continue to suffer and remain in the current pile of shit.

FIFA World Ranking

Singapore has up 17 place to 89 from 106 in May. This is a  refreshing change in direction as Singapore ranking has been slipping since World Ranking was introduced by FIFA in 1993. Following chart shows the ranking trend since August 1993.

Key Players
Ahmad Latiff
The 1997 Young Player of the Year is Singapore greatest hope for the future.

The 18 year old striker made his international debut in 1997. Though has yet to score a goal, he is often Singapore most penetrative player.

Good enough for Singapore but not quite for his club. He is often wasting his life on the bench of Geylang United.

Rudy Khairon.
The Tampiness midfielder is Singapore top scorer in 1998. A brace of direct freekicks over Cambodia and Philippines put  Singapore in the Tiger Cup Finals later this year.

Lim Tong Hai
The Lion Heart National Team Captain sit at the centre  of defence. He may not have pace, skill and  flair, but his aerial power and eight years of international experience make him an automatic first eleven.
