The Hurricanes were led by Winslow freshman Bethany Roderigue with 13
points and 5 steals. Also in double figures for the balanced champions
were Bath freshman Crystal Stilwell with 12 points, 5 rebounds, Katie
Stailing and Katie King added 11 points apiece and combined for 10
rebounds, while Lewiston’s Val Dumais contributed 10 points, 8 steals, 5
rebounds and 4 assists. Leading the Lightning was Calais’ Leah Martin
with 10 points. The championship is the Hurricanes second in as many
years and they finished thirteenth in the nation in 1997.
The basketball weekend started with a couple of blowouts as the
Hurricanes opened pool play with an impressive 110-13 romp over another
Lightning team. Six Hurricanes found the nets for double figures, led by
Bath’s Katie Stailing with 28 points and 13 rebounds. She was followed by
high school teammate Crystal Stilwell with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Finishing out the double digits were Lewiston’s Val Dumais with 16 points
and 6 steals, Turner’s Katie King with 12 points, Livermore Falls’ Kandace
Jones with 11 points and 7 steals and Lewiston’s Kelsi Royer with 11
points and 6 rebounds.
Next in pool play was the Coastal Suns, the Hurricanes again had their
track shoes on as they ran and hid for a 103-37 win. Katie Stailng again
led the scoring attack with 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Crystal
Stilwell came off the bench to drive home 16 points and 11 rebounds,
Kandace Jones knocked down 15 points while Lewiston’s Val Dumais found the
nets for 13 points and Chantal St.Laurent recorded an impressive 12
points, 9 assists, 9 rebounds and 8 steals.
The first game of the championship round found the Hurricanes facing a
familiar opponent in Natanis, a group of Central Maine girls, some of whom
Roderigue plays with during the high school season. As expected Natanis
provided much better competition than the previous days opponents. They
managed to stay with the Hurricanes for a half as they trailed by only a
slim 27-33 margin. The Hurricanes depth, however would provide the extra
fire power needed as the eventual champions would outscore their
counterparts by 15 in the second half for a final margin of victory of
73-52, the closest win of the weekend for the defending champions.
Katie Stailing again led the scoring attack with 20 points, 8 for 10 from
the foul line. She was helped out by Lewiston’s Sarah Methvin coming off
the bench with an important 12 points and 6 rebounds. Also in double
figures were Chantal St.Laurent with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 5
assists and Crystal Stilwell with 10 points. Leading the way on the
boards was Katie King with 8 and Bethany Roderigue with 5 and 9 points.
