December 30, 1998...

CHANTAL, VAL, SARAH and the rest of the Lewiston Lady Blue Devils backed up their ranking as the state's top basketball team with a win over Cony High School in the championship game of the Capital Classic. The Devils jumped all over Cony in the first half, leading by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, but Cony fought back and made it interesting before eventually falling 71-61. Lewiston is now 7-0.

Beth and her Mom, and the Stailing family made the trip to Augusta to cheer on the three Hurricanes from Lewiston. As you might imagine, the crowd was a bit rowdy... now there's an understatement!

December 29, 1998...

How do you spell complete domination?
KATIE Stailing. Our favorite Shipbuilder pumped in a ridiculous 42 points to lead Morse to a win over Concord, NH in the championship game of the Hancock Holiday Tournament at Portland High School. Earlier in the tournament she had 36 against Portland. Way to go Hurricane Katie!

December 28, 1998...

CHANTAL was named Game 1 MVP, mainly due to her ferocious defensive presence, leading Lewiston to an easy win over Winthrop at the Capital Classic Christmas Tournament at the Augusta Civic Center.

VAL dumped in 10 points, 3 points behind the game high, to help lead Lewiston to an easy win over Winthrop. The Blue Devils are set to square off against Eastern Maine powerhouse Cony in their own backyard, in a probable State Championship preview. Go get 'em 'Canes!

BETH scored 4 points as Winslow rolled to an easy win over Madison at Winslow's Christmas tournament.

December 26, 1998...

KATIE Stailing simply went off.
Morse went down to Portland High School and gave them a first class whipping, behind an impressive 36 points from Miss Stailing. Sarah, Chantal, Coach Mike and Michael were on hand, and Katie did not disappoint.

December 23, 1998...

KATIE Stailing continued her stellar play, powering in over half of her team's points in a heartbreaking loss at Lawrence, 53-56. She finished with 27 points, six rebounds and six steals.

KANDACE dumped in a game high 21 points in a win over Mt. Valley, as Livermore Falls stays undefeated at 6-0.

December 19, 1998...

SARAH leads the Blue Devil JV's to a lopsided (72-29) win over Massabesic with 19 points, going 6 for 6 from the foul line. She is 18 for 19 from the line on the year. They are 3-0.

VAL throws in 8 points and is showing tremendous poise as she and Chantal start their third consecutive game for the loaded Blue Devils. The Sun-Journal ranks this Hurricane-heavy Lewiston squad as the #1 team in the STATE.

CHANTAL hits her varsity high with 13 points as the Devils coast to a 71-28 thumping of Massabesic. Her constant defensive persuit of opponents is unrelenting and demanding recognition.

KANDACE hits for 15 points as Livermore Falls stays perfect on the season (5-0). The Andies will play Mt. Valley Monday evening at Livermore Falls, let's all go watch...

KATIE King continues her strong play, as she dumps in 14 points to lead the Hornets to a close win over Mt. Valley.

KATIE Stailing led Morse (1-2) to an easy win over Mt. Ararat, 81-42. She went for 16 points, 18 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 block shots.

December 18, 1998...

From the Portland Press Herald - Players to Watch:
"Katie Stailing, Morse sophomore: At 5-11, Stailing averaged nearly 18 points and 10 rebounds per game last season to become one of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference's premier players."

From the Lewiston Sun-Journal:
"One of the reasons for Livermore Falls' 4-0 start is sophomore guard Kandace Jones. Though the Andies have an abundance of veteran players, including D'Arcy Castonguay, Jessica Tripp and Jaime Finley, Jones is becoming one of the MVC's biggest threats.

"'She's an excellent ballplayer,' said Livermore Falls coach Shawn Legassey. 'There's more of her to come.'

The Andies' top returning scorer has doubled her average through the first four games, from 10ppg last season to her current average of 21.7 points. 'When she plays well and she's agressive, the team plays well', said Legassey. 'She has to set the tone for us this year.'"

ALSO...

Katie King had 7 points in a close loss to Winthrop.

AND...

Another Hurricane at heart in the Lewiston Sun Journal...
"Royer will crash the 1000 point club tonight, becoming the first ever Lewiston female hoopster to do so. She is the school's leading career scorer, followed by T.J. Methvin with 964 and Jen Tiner with 845." (The legend lives on...)

Katie led a come from behind effort, that saw the Shipbuilders fight back from as many as ten points to tie it up with under a minute left, but Morse fell victim to a buzzer beating "hail mary" and fell to 0-1. Morse hosts Amber and the Mt. Blue Cougars this week.

December 12, 1998...

CHANTAL and VAL both started the season opener for the preseason Class A favorite Lewiston, versus preseason number two Portland. The two Hurricanes were all over the floor, spearheading the Lewiston defensive charge in a 69-35 blowout of the Bulldogs.
