I had a large stuffed toy frog in the living room. He was sporting a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a cigarette. He looked like he'd been kidnapped while walking in the parade at Mardi Gras. Something that nice you have to show off. Also in the living room was a lava lamp, but it didn't work. The light went on but it was otherwise impotent. The lava just sat there and never went up.

A small hallway with a mystery stain on the carpet and a Stolichnaya Vodka mirror on the wall connected the bedrooms and there was a balcony off the back. I was on the top floor of a three-storey building. Location is, of course, everything, as I'm sure the couple who lived below me soon realised. They were both in their eighties and retired. I'm sure they learned some interesting stuff in their golden years.

The balcony had a rusted-out grill and an old towel in the corner that you wouldn't touch even with a stick. If you did, you'd have to be rushed to hospital for a tetanus shot. The towel had been rained on and was covered with spider webs. It was also as stiff as petrified wood. I always meant to string some police barrier tape around it, but never found the time. I also had plants on the balcony which I moved out there when the leaves finally fell off, leaving only sticks and dirt.

The dining room was empty except for my friend's mountain bike and some old bags of rubbish I hadn't taken out yet.

The kitchen was tiny. The drawers held two forks, two spoons, and a pastry brush. (You figure it out. I can't.) The refrigerator had a couple of beers, some junk food, and my gherkins. I had a can of crab soup in the pantry, though I don't know why. I was never hungry enough to eat it. When I did eat, I left the dishes in the sink until there were none left in the cabinet. Then I'd talk my mother into coming over and washing them. Somehow she also managed to clean up the place.
