  • F�bio Gurgel recently opened a new facility in Brazil strickly for private lessons. The facility is equiped with a lot of luxuries, including the availability of laundry service for those taking lessons. It's very nice.

  • Haroldo "Cabelinho" Bunn was recently promoted to black belt by Alexandre Paiva.

  • Well, I was waiting on photos to go along with this, but somebody is being really slow in getting them to me, so... back in April some Alliance team members fought in the Calhoun Submission Open. All of the team members won all of their fights. Felipe "Zicr�" Neto, Paul Creighton, Byron Stone, Phillip Smith, Bull Shaw, and Howard Pickrell were amoung the Alliance team fighters. They all deserve congratulations for fine performances. Leozinho's opponent backed out, and he was not able to fight. Ricardo Vieira broke his thumb in training and was also unable to fight.

  • Okay, I got in trouble about this (Hi Sam:-) ), so here's an update on the current happenings with the alliance team...

    The Alliance team recently had it's team selection tournament for the upcoming Brasileiro de Equipes. Here are some of the results and team make-ups:

    -F�bio Gurgel defeated Juninho in 2 min. and defeated Marcelo "Viking" Alonso by disqualification
    -Roberto Traven didn't fight, but because of his excellent performance at Abu Dhabi, he was put on the team
    -Rodrio "Comprido" Medeiros defeated Marcos Meirelles in a 0x0 fight with no advantages, judges decision. A very tough fight.
    -Cl�udio Moreno defeated M�rcio Figueiredo by 6x0 and defeated Grand�o by 1 advantage
    -Leonardo Leite defeated Dennis Machado by 3x2 and Fabr�cio Depes by 8x0
    -Jos� M�rio Esfinha defeated Nei Faustinho by 12x0 and lost to Comprindo by 2x0
    -Jamel�o lost to Fabr�cio Depes by choke and defeated Dennis Machado

    Roberto Traven won the absolute division at Abu Dhabi earlier this month. All of the Brazilian present got together to pick one person to represent them in the absolute, and they picked Roberto. I think this shows the great respect and honor for Roberto that the fighters have.

    The Master Atlanta team went to Auburn earlier this month for the quarterly Jiu-Jitsu tournament, and came home with vertually all of the trophies. We will list the details as soon as we get them.

    Some of the Master Atlanta team members fought in the Submission Fighting Open in Griffin Ga last month. The team had 10 fights total. They won 9 of their fights, and 8 were won by submission. The winners included Samual Joseph (arm bar), Bull Shaw (2 rear naked chokes), Robdrigo Medeiros (armlock, armbar, both in under 40 sec.), Byron Stone (armlock), and Phillip Smith (rear naked, armbar). Congradulations to all of the guys.

    F�bio Gurgel will be giving a seminar in New York at F�bio Clemente's academy on March 27, 1999. He is hoping to be able to stop in at Master Atlanta before going back to Brazil.

  • March - Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros was promoted to black belt by Jacar� on February 22, 1999. Congratulations to Comprido. He will be running the Master Ipanema academy in Brazil. His homepage is coming soon!

  • February - The Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team took 2nd place in the Pan American championships in Miami, Fl, USA. Here are the individual winners:

  • January 20, 1999 - Luiz Felipe "Zicr�" Neto was promoted to Black Belt by Jacar� in the Master Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Atlanta. Congradulation Felipe from us and all of the students at Master Atlanta and the Alliance team!!!!! You can see Felipe's new homepage here.

  • January 18, 1999 - Daniela Figueredo Paiva was promoted to Black Belt earlier this month by Alexandra Paiva. Congradulations Daniela!!! Also congratulations to the guys who received their blue belts from Jacar� recently!!

  • January 13, 1999 - The Auburn University Jiu-Jitsu Club (Alliance/Master Jiu-Jitsu affiliate) will be hosting a tournament on March 13, 1999. The tournament will have 4 weight divisions, and 2 belt divisions. It will take place on the campus of Auburn University.   • December 21, 1998 - Here is some more information on the Copacabana and Copa Hunter fights for the Alliance Team...

    Felipe Moreno avenged the losses of himself and Cl�udio Moreno to Marcel Ferreira by defeating him on Sunday in the Heavyweight Open Class brown belt division of the Copa Hunter Tournament. On a side note, Marcel was scheduled to be promoted to black belt today. Congradulations for the victory Felipe!

    Jos� M�rio "Esfinha" lost his black belt match to Leonardo Dalla on Sunday, but put on a very good performance, only loosing to 1 advantage point in a 0x0 fight. Congradulations Esfinha!

  • December 19, 1998 - Congradulations to Cl�udio Moreno and Jos� M�rio "Esfinha" MacCordi for their promotion to Black belt!!! Both guys recieved their promotion at the Copa Hunter SuperLiga tournament earlier today. Great job Cl�udio and Esfinha!!!

  • F�bio Gurgel and Roberto Traven are making plans to fight in the Copacabana challenge tournament in December. Roberto's match is scheduled to be against Roberto "Roleta" Magalh�es. F�bio's opponent has not yet been named. Other Alliance fighters that may be participating include Cl�udio Moreno. More news as it is announced.

  • For those who attended the Fabio Gurgel seminar in Atlanta in October, the tape will be ready on Wednesday, November 3. Call the academy to reserve your copy, and get specifics on the cost.

  • The Alliance Team entered the 1998 Brasileiro tournament, and placed 4th overall, 1st in the Feminino division. The following are some results:

  • These Alliance Team members won the S�o Paulo state championships for the circuit of 1998 in the following categories:

  • On September the 19 & 20, the Alliance team participated in the Paulista championships in S�o Paulo, Brazil. Here are the team's results: The Alliance team stays in first place in the circuit for the year by two points over Equipe God�i/Macaco, and becomes the 1998 S�o Paulo State Jiu-Jitsu Champions. Congradulations to all team members.

  • Both Bull Shaw and Phillip Smith had fights on August 30, 1998 in Atlanta. Bull's fight was Vale Tudo, and Phillip's was submission. Bull won his fight in 9 min. His opponent had to be taken to the hospital. Phillip won his fight in 47 seconds. Both guys did very well in their fights. Congradulations.

  • Some results from the 6th Copa Alliance tournament on August the 22, 23 in Espirito Santo, Brazil, are as follows:

  • On August 15 Team Jacar� participated in the Auburn University Jiu-Jitsu Club tournament in Auburn Alabama, USA. Results of our team will be posted soon.

  • On July 24 - 26 the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Team participated in the Mundial 1998 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We became the 1998 World Champions by winning 1st place in the team catagory with 96 points. Individual winners were as follows:
