First EP Trial
I thought, because of the long weekend over which the trial took place, that turnout would be poor. I am very pleased to say that turnout was better than expected. No less than 15 competitors entered this trial and we had some interested spectators too. Craig Frau was a new face in the entrant line-up. Welcome, Craig, good to see you there. Eugene Van Tonder also graced us with his presence. Lester Tait arrived late and brought along the wrong equipment. Scramblers are not waveski de rigeur, Lester! They dont float very well! He later came back with the right equipment for a pirate session at Suicide Reef.
The weather was good to us with the whole day being generally sunny and warm. The wind started off NW but backed progressively throughout the day until it was blowing SE when the Final heat was run. The wind never blew hard enough to affect the surf too much and the riders made good use of the relatively clean conditions. Riders like Ian MacLeod and Craig Seale stood out with radical moves throughout the trial. Mr. Consistency, Andr Rossi, showed a much improved style and rode well too. Andr Momberg, after a four month break, had a shaky start but was recovering well until his paddle snapped during a bad wipe-out in the Semis. Rudi Joubert showed the experience he picked up in Durban and rode very well, but was unlucky not to make the top 12. Credit must go to the Contest Director, Marius Du Plessis and his assistants, for a well run and setup contest. The caravan and flags made a positive advertisement for the sport and the visiting day trippers were left in no doubt as to what was going on. Keep it up! Only one criticism - judging changeovers were poor, the comp was a good hour longer than it needed to be. The Final was held in reasonably big but bumpy surf and tested the riders. The quality of surfing was good and the judges and totalisers had their work cut out to get results as the scores were almost neck and neck. Results follow:
1. Craig Seale
2. Johann Momberg
3. Ian MacLeod
4. Andr Rossi

According to my Internet source interest in waveskiing has also been dwindling a little in Australia due to the lack of pro-activity in gaining young blood in the sport. Much the same as in SA, though there are signs of renewed interest in both camps. Growth of waveski in America seems to be gaining momentum. There are some impressive waveski internet sites in America, as impressive as the South Australia Waveski Associations homepage.
Of interest to waveskiers is a new quarterly waveski mag in Australia. Their old faithful - Surf Ski Quarterly - died recently and a more down toned magazine called Wave Ski Karma, took its place. For those interested in subscribing to it here goes. All Africans wishing to subscribe for four issues must send an International Money Order (note: this has changed. Just send a cheque for R80-00 to the magazine. They'll take care of exchange hassles) for $A17 (Aussie dollars) to:

I was hoping to put the results from the Waveski World Championships into this newsletter but the organizers have been tardy in issuing the results to the regions so it will have to wait until the next newsletter. Waveski seems to be getting more media exposure lately. Watch the freebie newspapers (Algoa Sun, PE Express, UD News) for snippets and listen to Turtle Morriss Radio Algoa Surf Report at about 07h00 for results. Waveski items are also getting airplay on CBFM Stereo. There should also be articles in the regular newspapers from time to time.
Do you want to know the weather, wind and swell size before you dash off to the beach. Turtles Surf Report will give details. The Weather Bureau at (041) 524242 give quite an accurate forecast, as well.
Sorry, about the shortish letter. Work, work, work! See you at Seal Point, lets kick some Border butt!!
