NOTES FROM THE RINK:

Surya and the other ladies are introduced to the Goodwill Games crowd.

Surya's practices for the Technical Program later today have reportedly been very good. Uri Rembulun is attending these games and has agreed to send me some "reports" on how Surya is doing. He has sent one brief analysis already, and had the following to say:

2-18-00
"Adele and Madeline were supposed to meet here for a Surya Section meet, but for whatever reason did not make it. Hopes they will be here for the technical events tonight. Surya drew to skate 5th of the field of 7 ladies, and this is good for her. Unfortunately, her biggest competition will be Yuka Sato and she skates last, but at least Surya is not to skate first again! Surya skates very well in practices for technical program. I am sorry that I do not recognize her music, but this will be the first professional event for me to see of Surya this season, as Bulgaria gets no broadcasts of such events. It is very powerful however, and Surya really seems to be strong and command attention with this piece. Oh, and the technical merit!! I was pleasant surprise to see the ambition and technical merit be pushed by Surya once again. For this technical program, Surya plans to push the standards by attempting the Triple ToeLoop-Triple ToeLoop jump combination, a Double Axel, and as her free jump out of footwork comes a surprise.....a Triple Lutz! And was it ever solid! Her combination spin as always very strong. Wait until you see her Triple Lutz - just huge. I did two takes. It is certainly back, and consistent. Surya is skating very well and I anticipate high rankings for her. This program would fare very well at an ISU eligible competition. Much stronger technically (and intriuging, for me) than that of Michelle Kwan or Maria Butyrskaya. She has not yet practiced for the Artistic portion, but I expect it to be just as strong. I am hoping personally for the Four Seasons to be displayed again! As for the competition, Oksana Baiul is not skating well at all in practices. She rarely completes 3 revolutions. Elizabeth Manley even landed more triple jumping than Oksana. Katarina Witt does not triple, but is interesting nonetheless. Same analysis for Dorothy Hamill, who I feel has a stronger program than Witt. Yuka Sato is skating well, but does not have nearly the technical merit of Surya. Another big surprise comes from American Nancy Kerrigan who is attempting the Triple Lutz with some consistency, although the rest of her program especially spinning is fairly weak. This will be a close competition. So now I must rest for tonight's technical program. We shall all be rooting for Surya. I just got a call from Adele, who was delayed along with Madeline. We will all be supporting Surya tonight. Go Surya!"

2-19-00
"Surya shined in this technical program last night! It was much as she did in practices, but no Triple Lutz. Instead she shows us a Triple Loop. Part of her improv was shown when she left out the second half of her Split Jump-Triple ToeLoop-Triple ToeLoop combination. So, she skates down the ice, pops up a Split Jump and nails a Triple ToeLoop-Double ToeLoop combination. Very nicely done. She was definitely on tonight! She moved wonderfully. What a great program. This is the first time I have seen this program, but it is the same one as you describe from 1999 World Professional Championships, but with some changes. A well-deserved first-place above even Yuka Sato, and the crowd agrees with this. You should have seen her excitement at the close of this program. And the audience simply let loose the cheering! Bravo, Surya! As for the artistic program practices, Surya does not play her music in the rink. All others do, however. So I do not know what is in store. I will say that Surya was landing Quadruple jumps! Scattered Triple Lutz jumps as well as loops. Nancy Kerrigan skates to familiar music and is landing the jumps. Baiul is not fairing well, but Yuka Sato is skating strong. Elizabeth Manley is not doing well at all, and will probably stay behind both Katarina Witt and Dorothy Hamill. Surya has shown versatility in her moves and jumps, so I do not know what to expect in the artistic program! Some excellent skating however, to be sure! Go Surya!"

2-20-00
"I was very curious to see about what Surya was to skate to for artistic program. All week, no music selected for this in practice, or at least played. Surya skated to silence, and nailed just about everything she tried. So the artistic night finally came. Katarina Witt had an innovative, interesting program dedicated to a German media focus from years ago. No triple jumps this time, but good nonetheless. Elizabeth Manley skated just as she did in practices, which is not very well. She rushed this competition. Dorothy Hamill had a very nice flowing program, and remained ahead of Witt. True to her practices, Nancy Kerrigan skated quite well, but did not get the marks I anticipated. Oksana Baiul fell at the tail-end of what was a good program, and once again over-dramatized herself. I find her skating and after skating positions strange. I do not understand this. However, she was unhappy at being placed behind Nancy Kerrigan! Yuka Sato skated yet again to 'Hatful of Stars' which the spectator behind me labeled, "the program which would not die". I had to laugh. While this is a nice program, it is very slow and there are many stopping stand-still spots in it. She fell on a Triple Loop, but still got very high marks. I was nervous for Surya, who skated next. She looked nervous before her announcement to the arena. Her costume let us know she would be skating her Emma Shapplin number, and Adele and Madeline said it was a wise choice as this program brings out wonderful qualities in Surya. Adele gasped however when Surya singled her opening Double Axel. We recognized no more mistakes must be made for Surya to capture this title. She recovered well, landing a Split Jump-Triple ToeLoop-Double ToeLoop combination, soon afterwards throwing in a complimentary Double Axel to make up for the popped initial one. And her combination spin just went on forever! Lovely! The most tense moment was when Surya, with great speed, went into her Back Spiral into the Triple Salchow. The crowd gasped, as she just missed the end of the boards! However, it was all clean and no deductions. Surya landed then a great 1-Footed Backflip with twizzles out of it. She ended with a Forward Spiral, just gorgeous. So, Surya waits for marks, and she receives all 9.9's except for one 9.8, it would be close. Artistic marks range from 9.8 to one perfect 10! Surya looked very happy and rightly so. She wins a well-deserved 2nd Goodwill Games Title!"

"Last night's exhibitions were nice. Surya re-uses her 'A Question of Honor' program by Sarah Brightman. It was executed wonderfully, with two 1-Footed Backflips and a gentle ending. The audience was very appreciative, and it is rightly so. This was a great event for Surya."
