The annual Ed Theiss Memorial Day Teams Tournament was held at Delaveaga Park in Santa Cruz. Jim Hauer was forced to bow out with a sprained ankle. Out of towner George Allen came in from New Hampshire for the weekend event. Santa Cruz resident Dan Burleson returned for his second year. Jeff, Chris, Doug, Sam and Eric rounded out a group of seven. Falling back to alternate double rules, would leave one player to play as a team of one in the best disc format. Four players were designated as A players and three as B players. Teams were drawn, one from each pool and the last A player would be the solo player. George and Sam were paired, Eric and Dan became a team and Doug and Jeff were the final team, leaving Chris as the solo player. Chris was given two "option" throws per hole to equalize the format.
Sam and George fell one behind the pace on the first hole as they scored a bogey, Doug and Jeff dropped a stroke on the field with a bogey on hole three. Eric and Dan scored par on every hole for the first nine to capture the early lead. After nine holes Eric and Dan had 27, Doug and Jeff were at 28. Sam and George were at 30 and Chris bogeyed his way to a 35.
At hole ten Doug and Jeff scored to only par among the groups, to climb back into a tie for the lead. AT hole fourteen they again claimed the only par and took the lead by one stroke. Hole seventeen turned out to be a bright spot for the trailing groups as Chris, George and Sam deuced, while the leader groups were parring. Scores on the middle nine were Doug and Jeff, 30, Dan and Eric, 32, Sam and George, 33 and Chris, 34.
The positions stayed the same until hole 23 when Dan and Eric deuced to pull into a tie for the lead. They parred all the other holes on the back nine. The tournament was decided when Doug and Jeff faltered from their par streak with bogeys at holes 25 and 27. This was enough to give Eric and Dan a two stroke victory for the day. Final scores were Dan and Eric 27-32-26 for and 85. Doug and Jeff went 28-30-29 for an 87. Sam and George had 30-33-27 for a 90. Chris soloed to a 35-34-32 for 101.
