The Flying Deuces Spring, 1999 Tournament

The day started early as Doug arrived at Eric's at 5:55AM. They carpooled to Milpitas, where they met up with Chris, who ferried them all to Stockton's Oak Grove Regional Park. There Sam and John were waiting for them. Handicaps had been established using John as the standard to beat. Three rounds were planned at courses in the Stockton and Carmichael area. Conditions were already extremely windy with rain threatening. After some juice, donuts, muffins and warm-up throws, the group of five set off, starting on the back nine first,

Oak Grove

John claimed the first deuce of the day on the second hole (11) with a long drive parked near the hole. After four holes, John stunned the group by catching big wind and sailing deep into the water on the right, sinking his long distance XL disc. Would the loss of this disc affect his play? Sam also got caught in the wind and landed a floater in the water too. Doug and Eric were happy with pars on that hole. Bogeys plagued everyone on the sixth hole (15), but John took back the tee honors with a deuce at the next hole (16), John gobbled up some more handicap strokes of the field with the only par on hole eight(17). A recovery of Sam's floating disc was made, just before the halfway point. John par 27 with the rest in the 30's.

John and Eric scored deuces at the eleventh (2) hole. Hole twelve (3) was designated as closest-to-the-pin (CTP) and Doug hit a huge drive to win that jackpot. His deuce was matched by John with a thirty foot putt. Sam carved out a deuce of his own on the thirteenth (4) hole. By now the weather was keeping discs and shoes wet, as everyone played as safe as possible to get through. John had the best raw score with a 53. Doug had 58, Eric and Sam, 62 and Chris 72. After handicaps were applied for the round, Sam was the leader with a net 50, Doug followed with 52 and John at 53.

Everybody then jumped in the car to dry off, turned on the walkie-talkies and headed north to Sacramento.

Del Campo

Del Campo is a small grassy park with nine baskets to be played twice. The rain had let up, skies were mildly overcast with cool temperatures. Sam shagged his drive on hole one over the fence for a penalty, but recovered to make a four. Since everybody else got a natural four, Sam lost no ground. Chris tossed one over the fence on the second hole for a penalty stroke. Scores were pretty flat as most players were able to get up and down with a par. John claimed the first deuce on this course on the sixth hole. Doug had a good drive at hole eight that enabled him to deuce. John and Chris hit deuces on hole nine, with Chris converting a long putt.

Eric's allergies were really kickin' up a storm for some reason, as he was averaging about eight sneezes per hole. John offered him a Sudafed for some relief. The group proceeded to the second round to see if they could improve their scores from the first time though. Nobody went out of bounds on hole ten (1) the second time, but only Doug and John managed pars. Doug got off a huge drive on hole thirteen (4) to get a deuce, and John stayed right with him, converting a forty foot putt. At hole sixteen, Doug knelt down at the point where his drive landed and floated up a forty-five footer that hit chains and basket for one of the stirring shots of the day. At the seventeenth hole Doug had a huge drive, missed the twenty foot putt, rolled down a hill and then missed the uphill comeback shot, somewhat nullifying the shot from the previous hole. Meanwhile John got two huge drives and seventeen and eighteen to finish with two deuces.

John had a sterling 50 round followed by Doug with a 53, Sam and Eric each claimed another 62 and Chris had a 65. After applying handicaps to those scores and totaling from the first round, the leader was Doug with a 99, Sam one stroke behind at 100, John at 103, Eric 112 and Chris 113. Eric claimed the CTP award the first time around at hole three. The group took a lunch break at Togos, discussed the scores, then headed for the third round.

Albert Schweitzer

Schweitzer is a very, wooded course with tight fairways surrounded by lots of trees. John figured he had ten strokes to make up on Doug for the final round. John was the only one to manage par on the first hole. Then he hit consecutive deuces on hole three and four. Sam hit a deuce on hole three also, but frittered it away with a natural 6 on the next hole. Penalty strokes hit Sam on the fifth and Chris on the sixth as the small creek became a landing spot some plastic. John managed pars on seven and eight as Doug was bogeying. After nine holes John had gained six strokes on Doug. The Sudafed was kicking in for Eric as his play improved. Sam and Chris struggled with the trees. It had boiled down to a race between Doug and John for the top spot.

Doug buckled down and got the only par on hole ten. At hole eleven with the tee honors, Doug threaded his drive right where it ought to go with a left turn to the post out of sight. As it disappeared around the corner, a strange sound was heard. In response to the group's query of "What was that sound?", Doug joked "A big bush!". But when the group approached the hole Doug's disc was 5 feet from the pole with no bushes anywhere near. After testing to see what it sounded like when a disc hits the metal ring around the post, it was probable that the shot was probably a hole-in-one, but since it was unwitnessed, Doug settled for a deuce on the hole, another outright winner, to increase his lead. John cut into the lead with a deuce at hole thirteen and Eric matched John's deuce. Chris was warming up now and claimed a deuce on hole fifteen for an outright winner on the hole. At hole sixteen, Doug rifled a long straight drive through the trees untouched and landed five feet from a well protected post. His deuce here was another outright winner for the hole and closed the door to John's chase. John did claim the CTP award on this course.

Doug had a bogeyless final nine holes to finished with a 56. John had his third sub-par round with a 52. Eric tallied a 60, Chris a 70 and Sam a 73. Factoring in handicaps and totaling all scores found Doug the new trophy owner with a net 149. John played great all day with a 155 for three rounds. Sam's 161 was good enough for the final paying spot. Eric at 166 and Chris at 176 got two discs from John's disc selection pile.
