February 6th, 1999
Stormy weather was expected, but only strong winds were present as five Deuces played the original West Valley course. Jim Hauer made his first appearance of the year joining Doug, Eric, Sam and Rich. The strong winds took their toll early, sending Doug, Eric and Jim out of bounds into the parking lot, Jim salvaged a 4, but Doug and Eric got stuck with 5's. Rich parred and claimed the early lead. At the short hole three, Eric and Jim notched the first deuces of the day. Winds hampered drives on hole four as Eric and Rich were out of bounds in the street, while Jim's drive found a small hole in the tree. This left Jim with a "tester", which he converted for the only deuce on the hole and became the new leader. At he famed "Hall of Deuces" hole, Rich set the standard with a deuce, showing that it is possible, A long drive followed by an equally long approach that connected left everybody astounded. Doug also had a good deuce attempt, but ended up with a par, while everybody else was struggling to a 5! Doug blew his putt at the next hole for the only bogey, but fought back at hole eight with the only deuce. After nine holes, Jim Hauer held the lead with a 29. Doug and Rich were tied at 31, with Eric at 33, and Sam at 36.
Play improved on the back nine as Doug, Eric and Jim claimed deuces on hole ten and Eric hit another at hole twelve. Doug pulled even with Jim, with masterful pars on holes thirteen and fourteen, while Jim bogeyed both. Rich joined the hunt with pars on both holes also. Doug bogeyed hole fifteen to fall back with Rich, one behind Jim. Doug and Rich began their charge at hole sixteen. Rich had a pin high drive, the longest in memory on the hole, for an easy deuce. Doug converted a long shot for a deuce to produce a three-way tie for the lead. At hole seventeen, Rich converted another long drive for a deuce and sole possession of the lead. Doug just missed a deuce, hitting the wrong green box, leaving him and Jim one behind. Nobody really knew the standing at this point, as this narrative, was produced after examining the score sheet. At the final hole Rich produced another massive pin high drive, while Doug hit an obstacle, ending up with the shortest drive on the hole. Doug then produced a stunning 40 yard deuce. Jim, feeling the pressure, felt he had to go for it and sent his approach long into the street and OB. At this point Rich, carrying the score sheet ,had figured out that he needed his 10 yard putt for the win. He knelt down and threw a concrete slider, that slid by the flag pole missing by an inch.
Doug and Rich ended up tied for the day with 56's. Jim, suffering on the last hole finished with a 58. Eric had 61 and Sam 71.
